The Cure keyboardist Roger O’Donnell said he was diagnosed with lymphoma in September 2023 and revealed the news publicly on 1 September 2024. He described it as “a very rare and aggressive form of lymphoma.” Lymphoma Action later identified the subtype as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and reported that O’Donnell is in remission and back on stage.

What Roger O’Donnell disclosed

In a public post reported by The Standard on 1 September 2024, O’Donnell said he had been diagnosed the previous September. He wrote that he had “ignored the symptoms for a few months” before going for a scan; after surgery, a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. His post described the lymphoma as “very rare and aggressive” but did not name a subtype.

O’Donnell said he had completed 11 months of treatment. In the same report, he described himself as “fine” and said his prognosis was “amazing.” Those were his own words in 2024, not an independently reported assessment from a clinician.

What type of lymphoma did he have?

Lymphoma Action’s 2 May 2025 account identified O’Donnell’s diagnosis as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The subtype was not named in the original public disclosure reported by The Standard.

What treatment did he receive?

O’Donnell’s 2024 post, as reported by The Standard, referred broadly to immunotherapy and radiotherapy. Lymphoma Action’s later account names R-CHOP chemotherapy, methotrexate and radiotherapy. These descriptions come from different reports and do not establish a complete treatment record or provide enough information to compare regimens or draw conclusions about medical care.

Diagnosis-year reports differ

The Standard’s September 2024 report says O’Donnell dated his diagnosis to September 2023. However, a Lymphoma Action caregiver account published on 4 July 2025 gives 2022 as the diagnosis year. The available accounts do not explain the discrepancy, so the dates should not be treated as reconciled.

Remission and return to performing

Lymphoma Action’s story about Roger and Mimi says O’Donnell is in remission and back performing. He also described how treatment affected his relationship with music: “It was too emotional to play (keyboard). Anything that sparked any kind of emotion I couldn’t go anywhere near, because I wanted to focus on just getting through it.”
