These are different Carnival experiences, not interchangeable versions of one festival. Mardi Gras is a movable date tied to Easter; in 2027, Mardi Gras Day is Tuesday, February 9. For planning, distinguish that date from the longer season and from individual parade schedules.
New Orleans: best for variety and a citywide Carnival
New Orleans is the strongest choice if you want Carnival to shape the whole visit. The official visitor guide describes celebrations across neighborhoods, with major route parades, smaller walking parades and distinctive events. It lists a February 3–9, 2027 parade stretch and says parades run every night in that period, but the dedicated schedule says final dates and routes are still forthcoming. Check the official parade schedule before choosing where to stay or watch.
Public viewing, paid experiences and family options
You do not need a ticket to watch parades along public routes. Balls may be invitation-only or ticketed, and viewing stands can be purchased. The visitor guide identifies the Uptown St. Charles route as a family-friendly viewing choice. For a smaller-scale contrast to major parades, it names events such as Krewe du Vieux, the shoebox-float ‘tit Rex and the dog parade Krewe of Barkus. Getting around
The visitor guide recommends walking, but buses and streetcars may face limited routes or crowding during parades, and rideshare prices can surge. The RTA’s 2026 Mardi Gras guide advises allowing extra travel time and checking current alerts because detours change. That guide is operational context, not a 2027 transit timetable.
Galveston: best for a beach backdrop
Visit Galveston lists Mardi Gras! Galveston for January 29–February 9, 2027, describing two weeks of parades, balls, balcony parties, live music and events for different ages. The visitor bureau calls it the third-largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States; that is its own ranking. The Seawall gives parade viewing a coastal setting.

Family plans and event atmosphere
Family Gras and daytime parades are presented as family-friendly. The visitor guide cautions that the nighttime entertainment district may not suit children, so families should choose events and hours with that distinction in mind.
Weather and parking
February can be chilly, so the visitor guide recommends comfortable clothing and bringing a jacket. It lists cash-only lots and metered street parking, and describes paid-parking rules for daytime Seawall use. Parking availability and event instructions can change; consult Visit Galveston’s current guidance close to travel.

Visit Pensacola describes family-oriented celebrations in both Downtown Pensacola and Pensacola Beach. Its guide names three signature parades: the Krewe of Lafitte Illuminated Parade, the Grand Mardi Gras Parade and the Krewe of Wrecks Pensacola Beach Parade. This is a useful choice if you want named events in both settings rather than a single concentrated parade district.

The visitor bureau calls Pensacola one of the country’s original celebration sites. Treat that as destination-bureau framing, not a precise claim that it was the first. The reviewed guide does not confirm a complete 2027 schedule, so consult Visit Pensacola’s Mardi Gras guide for updates.
Mobile: best for downtown parades and local history
Mobile’s parades are held downtown and generally within the same area, according to the City of Mobile’s 2026 vendor brochure. The city describes Mardi Gras origins in its own terms: “Mardi Gras was started in Mobile, and we are extremely proud of this carnival fact.” This is the city’s historical framing, not an independently established comparison of origin claims.
The brochure says official routes and times are decided and published after the first of the year. Mobile’s 2026 season ran January 30 through February 17; those dates should not be carried forward as a 2027 schedule. Check official city updates for future routes and times.
How to choose and plan
- Choose New Orleans for the broadest variety of parade styles and a citywide season, while waiting for final 2027 routes before locking in a viewing spot.
- Choose Galveston for its published 2027 event window, coastal backdrop and a mix of family and nighttime programming.
- Choose Pensacola for family-oriented signature parades in downtown and beach settings, while monitoring for its full 2027 calendar.
- Choose Mobile for downtown parade traditions and the city’s own history narrative, and check for its 2027 details after they are published.
For any city, plan around road closures, crowds and parking rather than assuming normal travel times. Recheck current city event and transit information near your trip; detours, parking availability and event operations can change.
