Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s December 2025 selection offers 300 Australian and New Zealand songs as a discovery list—not a definitive verdict or a ranking of commercial hits. Its editors set eligibility rules, capped each artist at three entries and drew on songs from across the century so far. Explore the full list and its embedded Spotify playlist.
What the list is—and what it is not
Rolling Stone AU/NZ published its list on December 10, 2025, after its editorial team spent months debating and listening, with input from industry figures and artists. The result is a 300-song editorial selection. It is intended to prompt listening and rediscovery, rather than measure sales, streams, airplay or public votes. The article explicitly says it is not a countdown of the biggest commercial hits, and cautions that definitive comparisons between songs across eras are near-impossible.
That distinction matters when using the word “best”: this is the editors’ critical and curatorial judgment, not an objective scorecard. Editor-in-Chief Neil Griffiths described the work as a “wonderfully nostalgic and challenging feat” and pointed to the breadth of music produced by Australian and New Zealand artists this century.
How Rolling Stone set the scope
The article states two rules that shape who and what appears:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- An artist had to be born in Australia or New Zealand, or have been based in either country for at least five years. This is the list’s eligibility rule; it does not establish citizenship.
- No artist could have more than three songs in the selection.
The list ranges from Dave Dobbyn’s “Welcome Home” and Shihad’s “Alive,” both from 2005, to Party Dozen’s “The Big Man Upstairs” (2024) and Keli Holiday’s “Dancing2” (2025). Those examples show the span of release dates represented; they should not be read as a complete map of the list’s styles or artists.
How to use it for listening and discovery
The Rolling Stone AU/NZ article includes an embedded Spotify playlist, so readers can move from browsing the entries to listening. Treat the list as a starting point: follow an unfamiliar track to its artist, then explore the surrounding releases rather than assuming the selection is a complete catalogue of either country’s music.

How it compares with a countdown or a chart
Lists can look similar while answering different questions. To compare them fairly, check who chooses the songs, which artists and period are eligible, whether the result is ranked, and whether it reflects editorial judgment, audience votes or measured consumption.

For example, triple j’s Australian countdown includes Powderfinger’s “My Happiness,” Gotye and Kimbra’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” and Tame Impala’s “The Less I Know the Better.” ARIA charts provide a different kind of context: what is performing in the Australian market, not which songs an editorial team considers the strongest of the century.

A position in Rolling Stone’s list indicates where a song sits in that publication’s editorial selection. It does not establish that the song was the most streamed, sold or voted for, nor that every eligible artist is represented.
