There is no single, universally established Baldwin family tree. Baldwin is a surname shared by distinct families, and a surname or a similar name origin cannot show that two people are related. To trace Baldwin ancestors, begin with a known person, place, and period, then document each generation with records.
Is there one Baldwin family tree?
No. Published genealogies and historical pedigrees cover particular Baldwin branches; they do not establish a complete tree for everyone with the surname. A useful starting point is therefore a specific ancestor or line—for example, a Baldwin family in a named town or a relative who lived in a particular period.

These are explanations of surname history, not a way to identify an individual family’s ancestry. FamilySearch also reports that John Baldwin, from Buckinghamshire, arrived in what is now the United States in 1638 and settled in Milford, Connecticut. What does the documented Diddlebury pedigree show?
The Society of Antiquaries of London catalog describes a manuscript pedigree for Baldwin of Diddlebury, Shropshire. Its account runs from George FitzBaldwin, described as steward of Montgomery Castle around 1300, to Thomas Baldwin, and records Thomas’s two marriages and children. This is a branch-specific manuscript description, not evidence that every Baldwin family belongs to that line.

The same catalog describes a separate late-seventeenth-century pedigree that links Richard FitzBaldwin to Baldwin of Normandy. It labels that pedigree “Baldwyne Pedigree Forged.” The catalog is a useful warning against repeating a Norman or royal descent claim without supporting evidence. Which Baldwin genealogy books are useful starting points?
Several cataloged works may help identify a branch, but their existence does not establish that they cover all people named Baldwin or that every claim they make is verified. Check a book’s stated scope and follow its sources where possible.

- Record what your family already knows. Write down full names, approximate dates, locations, spouses, and children. Note who supplied each detail and distinguish recollection from documentary evidence.
- Look for records for the known person. Birth, marriage, and death records can connect names and relationships. Census records can place people in households over time; passenger lists and military records may add dates, locations, and family details. FamilySearch and Ancestry describe these categories in their Baldwin surname material and surname entry.
- Check each proposed parent-child link. Compare dates, places, spouses, and other identifying details. A name match alone—especially for a common name—is not enough to establish identity.
