What aired in season 28 of The Bachelor was a date-card setup that paired Maria and Sydney Gordon with Joey Graziadei in Malta after their conflict had escalated. Calling it “forced” is an interpretation, not a verified quote from Maria.
Why were Maria and Sydney on a two-on-one date?
In season 28, episode 4, Maria and Sydney were the only contestants left off the group-date card. Their card read, “Sydney and Maria, Meet me on the water.” They joined Joey on a boat and traveled to Malta’s Blue Grotto, according to ABC7’s February 13, 2024 recap.

The date brought the women’s existing conflict directly into Joey’s conversation with them. Sydney accused Maria of mistreating other women in the house, including telling Lea to “shut the [expletive] up.” Maria denied that specific allegation and accused Sydney of lying. Those are opposing accounts presented in coverage of the episode, not independently established facts about every exchange.
What happened during the date?
Joey said the dispute was derailing his connection with Maria. At the evening portion of the date, he acknowledged he might not know the full truth and said he would make his choice based on his connection. He gave Maria the rose and sent Sydney home. ABC7’s recap and Reality Tea’s episode recap recount that outcome.
#1 Best Overall
The broadcast framed the two-on-one as a chance for Joey to hear from both women amid their conflict. The recaps establish that Maria participated after receiving the date card; they do not establish that she had no choice, or that Joey or the producers forced her to go.
What did Joey say about the conversations viewers saw?
In a later interview with TheWrap, Joey said the broadcast did not include every conversation. “But I know there’s so much more than is always shown,” he said. He also explained that he was willing to have conversations when the women raised issues, while keeping his attention on his relationships: “I was always focusing on my connections.” TheWrap’s interview offers useful context, but it does not settle which contestant’s account of the conflict was accurate.

What is known—and what remains unverified?
- Shown in episode recaps: Maria and Sydney were the two women left off the group-date card, joined Joey on a boat in Malta, and faced a decision at the evening portion.
- Alleged by Sydney: Maria had behaved badly toward other women, including the accusation involving Lea.
- Denied by Maria: She said she did not make the specific remark and accused Sydney of lying.
- Not established: The available coverage does not show Maria saying she was forced to attend or prove what happened in every off-camera exchange.
Glamour also reported that Madina Alam later posted, “Do I regret using the word ‘bully’? Yes,” and acknowledged that she might not always use the right words while feeling strong emotions. That statement adds context to the conflict’s language; it does not verify every claim traded among the contestants. See Glamour’s episode and aftermath coverage.
