The clearest public explanation comes from Gene Simmons, not from a definitive account by Shannon Tweed. In a 2014 interview, Simmons acknowledged his infidelity and described his past behavior as selfish. He said that after Tweed had stayed with him for 29 years, their children were grown and he had to choose between ending the relationship and taking responsibility. That is Simmons’s retrospective explanation—not proof of Tweed’s private reasons for staying.
What Simmons said prompted his reckoning
In a 2014 interview with Dan Rather, Simmons said he and Tweed had been together for 31 years and married for two. He acknowledged infidelity and characterized his own earlier conduct as arrogant and selfish. He said Tweed had stayed with him faithfully for 29 years, and that once their children were grown, he faced a choice: separate or become responsible to the relationship.

His account presents the turning point as his own decision to take responsibility after years of behavior he regretted. It does not tell us, in Tweed’s voice, why she remained during that time. How Tweed described the relationship
She rejected the “open” label
In a 2008 TV Guide interview, when asked about their relationship, Tweed said, “Open” has never been a word I’ve described my relationship as. That statement is a reason not to present their partnership as an open relationship based on assumption. It does not, by itself, provide a complete account of the couple’s private boundaries. She called the marriage arrangement unconventional
In a 2010 CNN interview, Tweed said, “The marriage part is not conventional, but everything else is very conventional.” Her phrasing distinguishes the timing or form of marriage from the rest of their relationship; it does not offer a single reason she stayed. Read the CNN transcript.
Why they waited to marry—and what Simmons said he wanted
In a 2009 TV Guide interview, Simmons said, “I want Shannon to stay with me only because she wants to, not because she has to.” It is evidence of how he said he viewed her choice, not confirmation of every factor that shaped it. Read the interview.

The public timeline shows a long partnership before marriage: TV Guide described them as together for 25 years in 2008; the Los Angeles Times described 28 years in 2011; and Simmons said in 2014 that they had been together 31 years and married two. These are dated, attributed descriptions, not one independently verified current tally. Paramount’s 2011 announcement of an Entertainment Tonight interview establishes that their nuptials were impending, but does not explain their private decision-making. What the public record cannot establish
The couple’s reality series and press interviews showed conflict as well as longevity. A 2011 Los Angeles Times account described an argument on Gene Simmons: Family Jewels that ended with Tweed leaving with packed bags. Such scenes document what was presented publicly; they cannot disclose the full context of the relationship or establish a single reason she stayed.

There is no reliable basis in these accounts to say Tweed stayed for money, fame, the children, or an agreement to accept Simmons’s lifestyle. Those explanations may circulate as speculation, but the cited public statements do not establish them. Similarly, Simmons’s later description of marriage as having “somebody who in a real sense will give their life for you,” in a 2023 Guardian interview, expresses his view of marriage then; it does not prove what motivated Tweed earlier. Simmons said Tweed’s long commitment and their children reaching adulthood forced him to confront his behavior and decide whether to take responsibility. Tweed’s own public comments show that she rejected the “open” label and regarded the marriage aspect as unconventional, while describing the rest as conventional. Together, these statements illuminate how each spoke about the relationship at different moments; they do not reveal one definitive private reason Tweed stayed.
