Rowan Atkinson did not announce a permanent retirement from Mr. Bean. In 2012, he said he planned to do less of the physical, childish comedy that had brought him his greatest commercial success: he was getting older, the role was physically demanding, and he worried that a man in his 50s acting childlike could look “a little sad.” In 2015, he added that he wanted to keep Bean from aging with him.
Why did Atkinson say he would do less Mr. Bean?
In comments from a Daily Telegraph interview reported by ITV News on 16 November 2012, Atkinson described two linked concerns: the physical demands of the comedy and how its childlike behavior might read as he grew older. He said, “the stuff that has been most commercially successful for me – basically quite physical, quite childish – I increasingly feel I’m going to do a lot less of.” He also cautioned, “I also think someone in their 50s being childlike becomes a little sad. You’ve got to be careful.” ITV News reported the remarks.
Atkinson was not saying that he had lost interest in the character overnight. Rather, he was describing why he expected to reduce work built around Bean’s exaggerated physicality and childlike outlook. A UPI report the following day also noted his interest in taking serious theatre roles, suggesting that he wanted to spend more time on different kinds of performance. UPI’s 17 November 2012 report covered those comments.
Why did he want Mr. Bean to stay ageless?
In a 25 March 2015 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Atkinson explained why he had done little live-action Bean in recent years: “I am getting older, and he naturally has to get older with me,” he said, adding, “and that’s why I’ve done him very little in recent years. Because I don’t particularly want him to get old.” He called Bean “a rather timeless, ageless figure.” The Los Angeles Times interview also records that he was still voicing the animated series and had recently made a sketch.

That distinction helps explain the apparent contradiction in the headlines: Atkinson could step back from regular live-action performances while still returning to the character in formats that did not require Bean to visibly age alongside him. Atkinson also entertained the possibility of addressing age directly in a story; his comments were about preserving Bean’s ageless quality, not a rule that the character could never change.
Did Rowan Atkinson quit Mr. Bean for good?
No. The headlines in 2012 made “end” or “retire” sound more final than Atkinson’s stated plan to do a lot less. He continued voicing the animated Mr. Bean and appeared in occasional live-action sketches, including the Comic Relief sketch mentioned in the 2015 Los Angeles Times interview. His comments explain a move away from frequent physical performances and films, not the character’s permanent disappearance.
Was this a new announcement?
No. The explanation comes from interviews reported in 2012 and 2015. It clarifies why Atkinson said he would reduce his Mr. Bean work at the time; it is not a fresh announcement about his plans in 2026.

There is also earlier context, though it comes from a less direct source. An interview reproduced by Blackadder Hall and attributed there to Moviehole.net quotes Atkinson saying he did not like working very often and felt a bit old for another Bean film. That helps place his longer gaps between appearances in context, but it is separate from his 2012 explanation about physical comedy and how the character might look as he aged. Blackadder Hall’s reproduction of the interview is a secondary source.
