The backlash against Giuliana Rancic centered on a joke about Zendaya’s locs during E!’s 2015 Fashion Police Oscars coverage. Zendaya said the remark invoked an offensive stereotype; Rancic apologized on air the next day. The available reporting documents a public controversy, not a formal decision by Hollywood to cancel Rancic or proof that the incident alone ended her career.
What did Giuliana Rancic say about Zendaya?
During Fashion Police coverage of the February 22, 2015, Oscars, Rancic commented that Zendaya’s locs seemed to overwhelm her frame and said the hairstyle made her feel that Zendaya smelled of patchouli oil or weed. The comment connected a red-carpet hairstyle to a drug association, which became the focus of the ensuing backlash. ABC News reported the remark and its aftermath.
Why did Zendaya object?
Zendaya responded publicly on February 24, saying the remark relied on an offensive stereotype. She also explained that wearing locs on the Oscar red carpet was a deliberate effort to present them positively and affirm that Black hair was good enough. In her words, she wanted “to remind people of color that our hair is good enough.” ABC News quoted her response.
That distinction matters: the controversy was not simply about whether a fashion joke landed badly. Zendaya described how the association could reinforce a stereotype about people who wear locs, and why she had chosen that hairstyle for a highly visible event.

Did Rancic apologize?
Yes. On February 24, Rancic apologized on E! News, saying her comment had crossed the line and expressing regret to Zendaya and others she had hurt. She said, “I didn’t intend to hurt anyone, but I’ve learned it is not my intent that matters, it’s the result.” The Los Angeles Times reported on the apology; E! also published the apology video.
What was Rancic’s later explanation?
In April 2015, Rancic said she had meant to make a joke about hippie or bohemian culture and that editing removed context. That is Rancic’s account of what happened; the contemporaneous reports do not independently establish that the edit explains the remark or its impact. ABC News reported her explanation.

Did the incident end Fashion Police or Rancic’s career?
The reporting does not establish that the Zendaya controversy alone caused Fashion Police’s instability, ended Rancic’s career, or prompted an industry-wide cancellation. The show was already navigating cast and format changes after Joan Rivers’ death. Kelly Osbourne announced her departure on February 27, but TIME reported that the reason for her exit was unclear; timing alone does not prove that it was caused by the controversy.
In April, Rancic described broader problems with the show’s post-Rivers cast and format. She said she believed it was “only a matter of time” before that version of the program fell apart. That retrospective view, reported by TheWrap, points to wider pressures around the show, not proof that the Zendaya remark had no effect.

What “canceled” means in this case
“Canceled by Hollywood” is a dramatic way to frame a documented backlash. The evidence supports a narrower account: Rancic made a remark about Zendaya’s locs, Zendaya explained why she found it offensive, and Rancic apologized the following day. The sources cited here do not document a formal Hollywood-wide cancellation or establish a single cause for the show’s subsequent problems.
