The clearest explanation is twofold: Jolie has said Château Miraval is tied to painful events leading to the couple’s divorce, while the former spouses remain in a separate legal dispute over her 2021 sale of her stake in the winery. Pitt says the sale breached an agreement requiring his consent; Jolie disputes that such an agreement bound her. The competing claims have not produced a final resolution of the winery case.
What Jolie has said about Miraval
In a court declaration dated October 6, 2025, Jolie said she and the children had not returned to the estate because of its connection to painful events leading to the divorce. Vanity Fair reported her statement on October 10, 2025: “To this day, the children and I have never again set foot on the property, given its connection to the painful events leading to the divorce.” That is Jolie’s account of the property’s personal significance, not a court finding about the events she references. The history includes allegations about a 2016 private flight from Europe. Jolie alleged that Pitt physically abused her and the children during the flight. The Associated Press reported that the FBI said it would not investigate further, the U.S. attorney brought no charges, and child services closed its inquiry without a finding of abuse. Those outcomes should not be mistaken for a conviction or for a judicial determination of the allegations. (Associated Press)
Why the winery is still a legal battleground
Miraval is also a business dispute, distinct from the divorce itself. In 2021, Jolie sold her stake in Château Miraval to Tenute del Mondo, a company associated in reporting with the Stoli Group. Pitt later sued, alleging that the former couple had an agreement requiring mutual approval before either could sell an interest. Jolie disputes that premise. Pitt’s second amended complaint says he and Jolie were close to completing a deal for him to buy her stake, but that Jolie withdrew from negotiations before selling to the Stoli-related buyer. The complaint characterizes the sale as wrongful; it is Pitt’s account in a court pleading, not a court’s conclusion. (Pitt’s second amended complaint)
The nondisparagement clause and the competing accounts
A proposed nondisparagement clause is central to the parties’ explanations for why the buyout talks broke down. Pitt’s 2024 motion argued that the clause was a standard business protection and that Jolie’s explanation for ending negotiations was pretextual. Jolie and her attorneys, as reported by the AP, said Pitt sought a wide-ranging nondisclosure agreement as part of the proposed deal and described it as an attempt to cover up abuse allegations. Jolie’s position, as reported in the parties’ dispute, is that the proposed restrictions were too broad and constrained her ability to speak. These claims offer sharply different explanations of the same negotiations; neither should be presented as a settled judicial finding. (Associated Press)
The divorce settlement did not settle the winery case
Jolie and Pitt reached a divorce settlement in December 2024. The AP reported that the settlement did not resolve the separate lawsuit over Miraval. Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, said at the time, “Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.” His comment concerned the divorce settlement; it does not establish Jolie’s feelings about every aspect of the winery litigation. What the latest reported ruling decided
On May 4, 2026, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied Pitt’s request to compel production of certain private communications, according to Vanity Fair’s May 7 report. The judge found Pitt had not met his burden; the denial was reported as without prejudice. That was a procedural ruling about the requested communications, not a final decision on whether Jolie breached an agreement or whether the sale was wrongful. (Vanity Fair, May 7, 2026)
