Sony’s public record points to a franchise reset—not a single announced reason for Andrew Garfield’s departure. In February 2015, Sony and Marvel said they would bring a new Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and give Sony’s next Spider-Man film a new creative direction. Sony and Marvel announced Tom Holland as the next Peter Parker that June. A reported dispute over a promotional appearance may have contributed to the decision, but it has not been established as the sole or definitive cause.
What Sony and Marvel announced
The clearest evidence is the change in Sony’s public plans. In December 2013, Sony announced The Amazing Spider-Man 3 for June 10, 2016, alongside plans for Venom and Sinister Six. In July 2014, the studio moved the third film to 2018 and described Sinister Six as the next film in the series. These were announced plans, not a guarantee that production would go ahead.
On February 9, 2015, Sony and Marvel announced a collaboration under which a new Spider-Man would first appear in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Sony’s next Spider-Man film would be co-produced by Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal and developed with a new creative direction. Sony also said it would continue to finance, distribute, own, and retain final creative control of its Spider-Man films. On June 23, 2015, Sony and Marvel announced Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man for the next film. Together, the announcements show that Sony shifted away from the planned Garfield-era sequel and toward a new actor and a different creative framework. Did a missed promotional event get Garfield fired?
The story often cited is that Garfield missed a promotional appearance, reportedly disappointing Sony executives. The Independent’s account of a leaked Sony email described studio unhappiness after the absence and also cited concerns about The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s box office and reviews. That is secondary reporting, not a public Sony statement confirming why Garfield was replaced. It supports treating the event as a reported factor, not as a proven single cause. Sony’s public announcements document the change in plans and the recasting, but do not say that Garfield was dismissed because he missed an event. The leaked-email account should therefore be kept distinct from the official studio record.

What Garfield said about the change
In an interview with The Guardian, as reported by The Independent in December 2016, Garfield said he had not deliberately sabotaged his casting and had not compromised who he was. He also described himself as naive about the process of making a big-budget film. These are his reflections on the experience, not a studio explanation for recasting him.
In the same reporting, Garfield described feeling heartbroken when the story he had signed up to serve was compromised. In a separate interview excerpt republished by Spider-Man Crawlspace from Uproxx, he said he had petitioned Sony to work with Marvel. Asked whether he had been in talks with Marvel to continue as Peter Parker, he said no, and called the details a tender subject. He also said he had begun workshopping ideas for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 before the project did not proceed. The interview excerpt republished by Spider-Man Crawlspace

A 2017 report also described Garfield’s dissatisfaction with what he called a corporate mindset and his view that the finished films did not represent his work. That helps explain his creative perspective, but does not establish Sony’s reason for the recasting.
