The finale’s biggest sequel setup is not a surprise Batman appearance. It is Oz’s rise to a more secure position in Gotham—and the brutality that rise demands. The series leaves him poised to matter in the wider The Batman crime saga, while keeping the exact shape of any future clash with Batman unknown.
What The Penguin finale sets up for The Batman Part II
Warner Bros. Discovery describes The Penguin as an eight-episode DC Studios drama continuing the crime saga begun by The Batman. With Lauren LeFranc as writer and showrunner and Colin Farrell starring as Penguin, the series views Gotham primarily through Oz’s climb in the underworld. Its finale gives that climb consequences for the larger Batman story: Oz has become a more formidable power in the city.
Director Matt Reeves and LeFranc have discussed the series as connected to the next film’s story, and Reeves has described it as fitting between the films and enriching their shared story. That supports saying the show positions Oz for a larger role in Gotham’s future. It does not establish the next film’s plot, a particular confrontation, or which characters will return. Warner Bros. Discovery’s series description and Reeves’ interview with Forbes support the broad connection, not a scene-by-scene prediction.
Oz’s public ascent comes at a private cost
The finale makes Oz’s success hard to mistake for a clean victory. He kills Vic, the young associate who has become emotionally attached to him, after Vic calls him family. The act turns Oz’s rise into a choice to destroy a personal bond rather than risk the vulnerability it represents.

Rhenzy Feliz told TIME that he and LeFranc discussed Vic’s arc before filming, and that the first half of the killing scene mattered for showing Vic’s vulnerability. The scene’s impact comes from that contrast: Oz has gained power, but the person closest to him is not safe from it.
What the final Sofia scene means
The closing moments return to Sofia Falcone, whose story ends with her back in Arkham. LeFranc explained in post-finale coverage by Inverse that the ending acknowledges Sofia and Selina Kyle as half-sisters. It leaves a family connection in the story’s orbit, but does not confirm that either woman will appear in a particular sequel or that the relationship will be explored onscreen.

Why the finale’s Batman connection is compelling—but not a promise
The show’s crime-drama viewpoint and the franchise’s larger consequences are distinct. The Penguin follows Oz’s campaign to control Gotham’s underworld; the broader Batman story can now inherit a city with a newly empowered Penguin. That creates a strong dramatic possibility: what happens when a Batman story about Gotham’s corruption meets a man who has advanced by embracing it?
That question is an interpretation of the finale’s outcome and the series’ place in the shared story, not a confirmed plot synopsis. The available creator comments establish a broad connection to the next film, but do not disclose its events or settle the outcome of any confrontation between Batman and Penguin. The film’s precise plot and present release schedule are not established by those sources.

Comics to read after the series
Two comics offer useful, separate paths into Gotham’s crime stories. Neither continues the television finale or belongs to its continuity.

- The Penguin Vol. 2: All Bad Things is the most direct match for viewers who want more Penguin. Writer Tom King described the comic as more Penguin for people who enjoyed the HBO series. Discussing the comic’s ending—not the television finale—he said: “I think we’ve set up a confrontation with Batman that will come that’s essentially asking, ‘Will Penguin drag Batman into the darkness or with Batman drag Penguin into the light?’” DC lists the collection as available through bookstores, comic shops, libraries, and digital retailers. - Batman: The Long Halloween is an adjacent choice for readers drawn to Gotham’s crime families. DC describes it as a holiday-murder mystery and includes Penguin among its characters; it is not a direct tie-in to the television continuity. See DC’s official book page.
