Network 10 announced the cancellation on June 9, 2025; the program’s final broadcast was scheduled for June 27.
What McGarvey reportedly told staff
PerthNow reported that McGarvey addressed staff on June 9, 2025, explaining that the younger demographics who helped The Project thrive had changed how they watched television.
“We didn’t think we’d be here for 16 years but as you all know those younger demographics in particular who really made the show … thrive in the beginning have just evolved and they’re watching different platforms and they’re watching different services.”
“For those reasons, unfortunately the show just doesn’t stack up any longer.”

Why Network 10 changed the schedule
The explanation reported from McGarvey focused on audiences shifting to different platforms and services, and her view that the show no longer “stack[ed] up”. That account points to a change in viewing habits as the reason given to staff; it does not establish a more detailed internal assessment of the decision.
ABC News reported an average metro audience of 188,000 for The Project in 2025 year-to-date figures. That figure is for metro viewers and a year-to-date period; the cited report does not specify the exact measurement cutoff or give a national, all-platform total. ABC News’ report also covered the hosts’ response to the cancellation.

What replaced The Project
Network 10 planned a one-hour national program covering news, current affairs and insights in the early-evening 6pm slot. The network’s 10 NEWS+ program page describes it as following the 5pm local bulletins and providing extended context and deeper reporting. The replacement therefore represents a shift from The Project’s panel-led mix of news and entertainment toward a longer news and current-affairs format. The cited material does not establish a like-for-like ratings comparison between the two programs.
