Its striking cover showed West wearing a crown of thorns, invoking Christian imagery associated with Jesus’s suffering.
What was “The Passion of Kanye West”?
It was a Rolling Stone cover feature about West, published in early 2006. NPR’s 2025 retrospective identifies the feature and describes its cover image as presenting West in a martyr-like pose. The headline’s dramatic wording belongs to the magazine feature; it should not be mistaken for an album title. NPR’s retrospective
Why did the cover use a crown of thorns?
The crown of thorns and the word “Passion” brought to mind the Christian account of Jesus’s suffering. Focus Features commentary connects the headline to The Passion of the Christ and describes West as posing as Jesus. That is an interpretation of the cover’s imagery, not proof of what West intended by it. Focus Features commentary
Some observers objected to the image. A 2006 column, quoted in a 2010 appellate brief, called the portrayal offensive to Christians; a later Catholic news article also reported that many people at the time regarded it as blasphemous. These accounts document criticism, not a unanimous response from Christians or readers. 2010 appellate brief

How does “Jesus Walks” fit into the story?
West’s Christian themes were already part of his public music in this period: “Jesus Walks” appeared on his 2004 debut, The College Dropout. That context helps explain why religious imagery was a recognizable part of the conversation around him. It does not establish his personal explanation for the Rolling Stone cover. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the feature reveal about West’s early career?
NPR’s 2025 retrospective treats the cover feature as a snapshot of West’s first years of major success and his emphatic sense of his own accomplishments. It also recalls tensions involving fellow Chicago artist Common, whose 2005 album Be West produced. This is later context for the feature, not a substitute for the original article or a complete account of what it said. NPR’s retrospective
