That storyline gives the season a clear dramatic engine; its other threads offer striking images and performances, but can feel less focused and less urgent by comparison. The result is a darker, more kinetic season whose strongest scenes do not fully solve its problems with pacing and story balance.
What Season 2 is about
The eight-episode season returns to Middle-earth in the Second Age, thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings. Its central conflict is the return of evil and Sauron’s effort to shape the future of the Elves and other peoples. The season’s episode run was August 29 to October 3, 2024, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
That broad conflict becomes most vivid through Sauron’s relationship with Celebrimbor, the Elven smith whose skill and ambition make him central to the forging of the Rings. Their story turns a large-scale fantasy premise into an intimate contest of influence: one character pursues a design while the other tries to understand the forces acting on him. It is the season’s most coherent line, and the one that best connects character drama to the fate of Middle-earth.
Why Sauron and Celebrimbor are the season’s strongest thread
The season works best when it treats Sauron not simply as a looming villain, but as a strategist whose power lies in reading what other people want. His schemes give scenes direction and tension, while Celebrimbor’s choices make their consequences personal. Their dynamic also gives the forging of the Rings a dramatic purpose beyond its importance as a familiar piece of Tolkien lore.

This is an evaluative judgment, not a claim that every scene in their storyline succeeds. The contrast is that Sauron’s machinations provide a relatively clear through-line, whereas the season’s other stories sometimes feel more like parallel obligations than parts of one accelerating drama. In Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup of early reviews, IGN similarly argued that the series shines brightest with Sauron’s schemes and becomes thinner when it moves away from them. The roundup also records critics praising the darker tone and improved writing, alongside reservations about pacing and writing choices: Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 2 review roundup.
Where the season loses momentum
The main weakness is not a lack of incident or spectacle; it is the unevenness of the storytelling. With several characters and regions competing for attention, some plotlines carry less immediate dramatic weight than the Sauron-Celebrimbor conflict. Movement between them can interrupt the strongest thread just as it is building pressure. Viewers who want every strand to advance at a steady pace may find the season diffuse, even when an individual sequence is visually impressive.
Emma Stefansky’s September 12, 2024 review in The Atlantic captures a related problem: “the episodes manage to feel both overlong and cramped.” She argues that the show compresses Tolkien’s nearly 4,000-year timeline into a few decades and stretches suspense around a story whose broad outcome many viewers already know. That is Stefansky’s critical reading of the adaptation, rather than an established explanation for why the series made those choices. Her analysis is available at The Atlantic.
Timeline compression is a consequential adaptation choice: it can bring characters and events into closer dramatic proximity, but it changes the scale of the history being depicted. Whether that trade-off works depends on the viewer. It may make the story easier to follow as a continuous television drama, while also diminishing the sense of vast historical distance that Tolkien’s chronology suggests.

Critics’ responses were not limited to the season’s central storyline. Rotten Tomatoes’ review roundup records praise for performances, production values, action, and the climactic battle, as well as for a darker and more complex season. Those strengths give the show scale and atmosphere, and help explain why its most successful episodes can feel more assured than the overall pacing might suggest.
Still, spectacle is not a substitute for narrative clarity. The action has the greatest force when it grows out of character decisions or advances the season’s central conflict. When a sequence mainly adds scale, it may impress in the moment without making the scattered storylines feel more unified.

Is Season 2 better than Season 1?
It is reasonable to call Season 2 more kinetic and, in some respects, more confident: Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critics consensus says it “discovers new virtues” while retaining some of the first season’s vices. The season’s darker tone, improved writing noted by some critics, and focused Sauron storyline provide a stronger dramatic center. But the underlying challenge of balancing several plots remains, so “better” depends on whether a viewer values a sharper central conflict more than consistent pacing across the whole ensemble.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 85% Tomatometer from 173 critic reviews and a 58% Popcornmeter from 5,000+ audience ratings when checked October 8, 2026. These are a dated snapshot of a changing aggregator page, not permanent scores or an explanation of why critics and audience members responded differently. The current listing is at Rotten Tomatoes.

If Sauron’s return, the forging of the Rings, and the political and personal maneuvering around them are what interest you, Season 2 has a strong reason to continue. Its most focused material turns a mythic conflict into a tense character drama, and its scale, performances, and action add substantial appeal. If you need every storyline to move with equal clarity and urgency, the season’s uneven pacing may frustrate you.
Season 2 is listed as streaming on Prime Video by the official Amazon series hub and Rotten Tomatoes. Availability can vary by country; check the service in your region for current access. For optional background reading, Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is related to the world the series draws on, but it is not a season companion and should not be treated as a direct source for every event depicted.
