The Matrix Reloaded ranks first among the four released live-action Matrix films by worldwide theatrical gross across all reported releases. The Matrix (1999) is second, The Matrix Revolutions third, and The Matrix Resurrections fourth. The figures below are nominal gross receipts, not inflation-adjusted values or studio profits.
Matrix movies ranked by worldwide box office
This ranking uses Box Office Mojo’s worldwide “All Releases” totals for each film, so reported re-releases are included. Figures are as listed by Box Office Mojo in 2026 and may change if later releases are reported or records are corrected.
| Rank | Film | Worldwide gross, all releases |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Matrix Reloaded (2003) | $741,847,937 |
| 2 | The Matrix (1999) | $473,333,509 |
| 3 | The Matrix Revolutions (2003) | $427,344,325 |
| 4 | The Matrix Resurrections (2021) | $157,386,805 |
What the totals include
Box Office Mojo separates a film’s “All Releases” total from release-group figures such as “Original Release.” Using the all-releases figure consistently matters because re-releases add to some films’ totals. These are nominal theatrical gross receipts: they are not adjusted for inflation, and they do not show how much a studio kept after exhibitor shares, distribution costs, marketing, or other expenses.
The Matrix Reloaded: first, with later releases included
The 2003 film’s all-releases worldwide gross is $741,847,937. Box Office Mojo lists $739,412,035 for its original-release group and $2,423,288 for a 2003 IMAX release, as well as later smaller re-release entries. The all-releases total is therefore the appropriate figure for this ranking.

The Matrix: re-releases lift its all-releases total
The 1999 original has an all-releases worldwide gross of $473,333,509; its original-release group is listed at $463,517,383. Box Office Mojo also lists release groups for 2003, 2019, 2020, 2021, a 25th-anniversary release in 2024, another 2024 release, and a 2025 release. The 2025 group is listed at $5,486,432 worldwide, so a ranking limited to first theatrical runs would not use the same total shown here.
The Matrix Revolutions: close to its original-release figure
The all-releases worldwide figure is $427,344,325, compared with $427,343,298 for the original-release group. Box Office Mojo lists two very small later re-release entries.
The Matrix Resurrections: the lowest total in this ranking
The 2021 film’s $157,386,805 worldwide total comprises $37,686,805 domestic and $119,700,000 international, as listed by Box Office Mojo. The ranking establishes its position by reported gross; it does not establish why its total differs from those of the earlier films.

How to read this ranking
- It measures theatrical gross, not profit. The figures are ticket-sale receipts before the costs and revenue shares that determine a studio’s earnings.
- It is not an inflation-adjusted comparison. Box Office Mojo’s title pages do not provide a consistent inflation-adjusted series for these films, so the nominal totals should not be read as a comparison of purchasing power across release years.
- Release accounting changes totals. “All Releases” includes reported re-releases, while an original-release figure covers a narrower release group. Comparing one film’s all-releases total with another’s original-release figure would mix methods.
