Spoilers for the first-season finale, “A Great or Little Thing.” Oz wins the power he has chased, but the finale makes that victory feel like a defeat: he kills the loyal person who calls him family, sends Sofia back to the place she fears, and ends by staging the maternal approval he cannot truly obtain. The tragedy is not that he loses everything. It is that, at the moment of triumph, he chooses to destroy the bonds that could have made it mean something.
Why does Oz kill Vic?
Victor has not betrayed Oz. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc says the thing Victor does “wrong” in Oz’s eyes is that “he loves him and he cares about him.” That makes the murder more damning than a piece of criminal housekeeping: Oz kills Victor because Victor’s care exposes a kind of connection Oz has come to treat as weakness. LeFranc’s explanation to TheWrap frames the act as a choice, not a response to disloyalty.
Victor’s final appeal to their sense of family makes the scene’s emotional stakes plain. Rhenzy Feliz, who plays Victor, told TIME that the subtext was Victor’s love for Oz; he described the moment as soft and slow before it turned brutal. That is Feliz’s reading of the scene, rather than a claim about authorial intent, but it underscores the contrast: the bond is real, and Oz deliberately ends it.
LeFranc describes the killing as Oz stifling his own heart: “So he stifles his own heart. He kills it.” It is also the moment he fully embraces the Penguin he has been becoming. Oz’s rise is therefore inseparable from his self-imposed emotional ruin.

What does The Penguin finale mean?
The finale places outward success beside inward cost. Oz gets closer to the power he wants, but his actions reveal what that power requires of him: not merely defeating opponents, but refusing the vulnerability of genuine attachment. The Ringer’s recap puts the ending in terms of Oz winning while nearly everyone around him loses; the deeper sting is that Oz makes his own relationships part of that loss. The Ringer’s finale recap calls the episode “A Great or Little Thing.”
That is why “perfect tragedy” works as an interpretation of the finale, not as a claim about a universal critical consensus. Oz achieves the external victory, but the intimacy around him is either destroyed or reduced to a performance. The season’s final image does not show a man who has learned to love; it shows a man arranging the world to imitate the love he wants.

Is Sofia back in Arkham?
Yes. Oz chooses to have Sofia returned to Arkham, knowing how much she hates it. LeFranc says that decision is meant to feel tragic. His power is evident in how specifically he can punish her: he knows the place represents fear and suffering for her, and sends her back there anyway.
A letter from Sofia’s half-sister Selina gives the ending a narrow counterpoint. It does not undo Sofia’s imprisonment or guarantee what comes next, but it signals that she is not wholly without family. The contrast with Oz is sharp: Sofia receives a small, genuine sign of connection from someone absent, while Oz has the person he wants beside him and still cannot receive her love honestly.

Why does Oz pretend Eve is his mother?
In the final scene, Oz has Eve dress as his mother and tell him she is proud of him. LeFranc describes the moment as Oz embracing delusion. He has secured visible signs of success and his mother is physically nearby, yet the approval he wants is staged rather than freely given. The scene turns his victory into a private fantasy: instead of risking the truth of a relationship, he scripts the words he longs to hear.
The parallel with Victor completes the tragedy. Victor offers Oz real affection and is killed for it; Eve performs the maternal approval Oz craves. Oz ends with the appearance of closeness, but only after eliminating the bond that could have challenged his isolation.
