Spoilers for The Last of Us season 2, episode 7, including major deaths and the ending.
“Convergence” is a brutal, compelling hour that makes a deliberate—and divisive—choice for its season finale: it cuts away before the immediate outcome of Ellie and Abby’s confrontation, then shifts to Abby at the start of Seattle Day One. The move sharpens the show’s perspective on revenge, but leaves the season without the resolution many viewers expect from a finale.
What happens at the end of The Last of Us season 2?
“Convergence,” season 2’s seventh and final episode, aired May 25, 2025. Nina Lopez-Corrado directed it; Neil Druckmann, Halley Wegryn Gross, and Craig Mazin are credited as writers. Rotten Tomatoes lists the episode and its credits.
In Seattle, Ellie’s search for Abby leads to devastating consequences. Ellie accidentally kills Owen and Mel. Later, Abby reaches the theater and shoots Jesse before confronting Ellie and Tommy. The scene cuts to black after a shot, withholding the confrontation’s immediate outcome. The episode then jumps back to Seattle Day One, where Abby wakes at the WLF headquarters. That final shift sets up a return to the same Seattle period from Abby’s perspective; it does not show what happens next in the theater. TechRadar’s ending explainer describes the sequence.

Does the cliffhanger work as a season finale?
The cut is best understood as a structural decision, not a resolution. The episode stops Ellie’s immediate pursuit at its most volatile point, then asks viewers to revisit Seattle through Abby’s experience. That can make the story’s competing motives feel less one-sided: the violence Ellie sees as pursuit and consequence is also part of a wider chain of grief and retaliation.
But the timing carries a real cost. After a season built around Ellie’s search, withholding the confrontation’s outcome means the finale offers anticipation in place of closure. The switch to Abby may broaden the emotional frame, yet it also interrupts Ellie’s arc at its peak. Whether that feels purposeful or simply incomplete depends on how much value a viewer places on the next perspective versus a season-ending payoff.

Craig Mazin said the creators discussed other approaches, including interweaving the characters’ stories, before settling on this cut. At a press conference attended by GamesRadar+, he explained: “Isn’t this part of the genetics of how this story functions? It’s just part of the genetics.” He also acknowledged the gamble: “Now, what it means is we have to take risks as a television show, and HBO [has] to back us taking risks.” GamesRadar+ reported Mazin’s comments.
Who dies in the finale, and is Ellie dead?
Ellie accidentally kills Owen and Mel while searching for Abby. Abby shoots Jesse when she arrives at the theater. The episode does not establish that Ellie dies: it cuts away after a shot during Abby’s confrontation with Ellie and Tommy, then moves to Abby’s earlier timeline. The ending leaves the immediate outcome unresolved rather than confirming Ellie’s fate. TechRadar’s account of the ending likewise describes the cut without declaring Ellie dead.

What does the ending mean for Abby?
Abby’s return to Seattle Day One is a change in point of view and time, not a postscript to the theater scene. It signals that the story will revisit the Seattle events through her experience, inviting viewers to consider the lives and reasons behind the violence Ellie has encountered. That reframing may complicate the audience’s judgment of Abby, but the finale itself does not resolve the confrontation or spell out everything her perspective will reveal.
How critics received “Convergence”
The critical response captured here is divided, especially over whether the episode feels complete as a finale. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 75% Tomatometer based on 24 reviews when accessed in 2026; that score is an aggregator snapshot and can change. Its critics consensus calls the episode “definitively brutal” while describing its ending as “veering.”

Caroline Siede’s review for The A.V. Club finds the episode strong on its own but more like an appetizer than a season-ending meal. TIME’s Judy Berman calls the finale abrupt and unsatisfying, arguing that the seven episodes adapt only part of The Last of Us Part II; she also praises the performances and production design. Those assessments point to the central tension in “Convergence”: its cliffhanger may serve the larger story while still feeling like an unsatisfying endpoint to this season. The Last of Us Part II Remastered for PlayStation 5 is optional source material for viewers who want to explore the story behind the adaptation. The game contains substantial story spoilers beyond the show’s current point, so it is better suited to viewers who are comfortable learning what the series has not yet shown. The finale points toward Abby’s perspective, but watching the show without consulting the game remains a valid choice.
