The nine episodes below are an editorial selection, not an authoritative ranking: they are included because they drew substantial public, platform, investor or rights-holder scrutiny. Some are documented events; others include allegations that should not be mistaken for legal findings.
1. Filming an apparent suicide victim in Aokigahara
In 2017, Paul uploaded a video filmed in Japan’s Aokigahara forest that showed an apparent suicide victim. TechCrunch’s contemporaneous reporting said the video was removed after criticism of the decision to film and publish the footage. The central issue was not simply where it was filmed: viewers objected to the exposure of a deceased person and to the way Paul and companions reacted in the video.
Paul said he had intended to raise awareness about suicide prevention. That stated intent did not settle the criticism, which focused on the published video and whether its presentation was consistent with that explanation. He apologized after the backlash. The event should be discussed without reproducing graphic details or treating the person shown as a prop in a creator controversy.
2. The video’s joking presentation and outtakes
Related to the filming itself, critics objected to the video’s tone and presentation. Contemporaneous coverage described Paul and companions reacting to the footage, while the video’s outtakes and joking moments intensified criticism that the subject was being treated insensitively. This is a distinct part of the backlash, but not a separate, unrelated incident: it concerns how the Aokigahara footage was edited and presented.

3. YouTube’s response to the Japan video
YouTube removed the video and took further action affecting Paul’s projects and platform status. The Guardian reported that YouTube suspended his paid projects and removed him as a preferred advertising partner. ABC News reported that his YouTube Originals were put on hold and that he would not appear in season four of the original series Foursome. These were platform and business consequences of the episode, not legal findings about it.
4. Tasing dead rats and the later ad suspension
In February 2018, Paul posted a video in which he used a stun gun on two dead rats. The Guardian reported the video as part of a broader pattern of behavior that prompted criticism. YouTube later temporarily suspended ads on Paul’s channels, publicly citing a “recent pattern of behavior.” ABC News reported that the platform specifically pointed to the rat video and Paul’s encouragement of the Tide Pod challenge. The suspension was a platform decision; it does not mean YouTube treated every controversial act in the video identically.

As quoted by The Guardian, a YouTube spokesperson said: “This is not a decision we made lightly, however, we believe he has exhibited a pattern of behaviour in his videos that makes his channel not only unsuitable for advertisers, but also potentially damaging to the broader creator community.”
5. Encouraging the Tide Pod challenge
ABC News reported that YouTube cited Paul’s encouragement of the Tide Pod challenge when explaining the temporary ad suspension. The challenge involved people posting videos of themselves biting or ingesting laundry detergent pods, which can cause serious harm. The available reporting supports saying that Paul encouraged the challenge; it does not establish that he himself ingested a pod or that a particular viewer was harmed because of his content.

6. Performing “CPR” on a live fish
The Guardian also reported that the dead-rat video included Paul taking a live fish out of water and performing what he called “CPR” on it. The fish incident drew criticism for the treatment of a live animal and its use as video content. It was part of the same video reported in connection with the rats, so these are closely related controversies rather than wholly separate episodes. ABC News’ account of YouTube’s ad decision specifically named the rat video and Tide Pod encouragement; it did not identify the fish segment as a separate stated basis.
7. CryptoZoo and complaints from buyers
CryptoZoo was presented as a game in which users could use a project token to buy NFT eggs, hatch hybrid animals and potentially breed or convert them. TIME’s 2023 investigation reported delayed development and complaints from people who had bought into the project. Coffeezilla also published a three-part investigation into CryptoZoo.
Rank #4
A class-action lawsuit was filed in February 2023. Its claims are allegations, not a court finding that Paul or anyone else committed wrongdoing. TIME reported that Paul pledged in January to give up his stake, refund holders at least $1.3 million and finish the game. That report documents a pledge; it does not establish that the refunds were completed or that the game was finished. The sources available for this account do not establish the lawsuit’s final disposition or the present status of those commitments.

TIME also investigated Paul’s promotion of Dink Doink, a meme coin, and reported evidence and claims about his role and token holdings. Those conclusions should be attributed to TIME’s reporting, not presented as judicial findings. A lawyer for associates of the project disputed knowledge of the wallet TIME examined. The disagreement matters: reported blockchain analysis and a response from a lawyer are not the same as a court determining who owned or controlled particular tokens.

9. The “No Handlebars” copyright dispute
Paul released “No Handlebars” in 2017. In a retrospective, TV Insider reported that Flobots member Jamie Laurie criticized the track, and that Flobots later sued over alleged copyright infringement. Laurie’s response track included the line, as quoted by TV Insider, “If you like someone, don’t blatantly bite from ’em.” The accompanying video was also criticized. The reporting cited here does not establish the lawsuit’s outcome, so the dispute should not be described as a proven infringement or as resolved in either party’s favor.
How to interpret the list
These episodes differ in what is established and who raised the concerns. The Japan video, the 2018 content and YouTube’s actions are documented in contemporaneous news coverage; CryptoZoo and Dink Doink also involve investor complaints, investigative reporting and, in CryptoZoo’s case, a lawsuit whose claims remain allegations in this account. The copyright dispute is reported retrospectively, without an established outcome here. The nine items are therefore best understood as major reported flashpoints, not a definitive ranking of severity or proof of legal liability.
