It is the story of a band whose sound kept changing as its reach grew—and of how frontman Matty Healy’s public account of heroin addiction became part of the music, most directly in “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You).” The band’s records document artistic change; interviews document what Healy and those around him said about addiction and treatment. Those are related parts of the story, not proof that one caused the other.
Who are The 1975?
The 1975 are Matthew Healy, Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald and George Daniel. According to AllMusic’s band biography, the members began by playing covers at local all-ages shows before developing original material. That starting point helps explain their rise as a gradual progression from a working band into a group with a distinctive, increasingly wide-ranging catalogue.
Their identity has never rested on one fixed genre. Apple Music’s artist biography describes early records shaped by 1980s pop and shoegaze, and a later palette that reaches into folk, UK garage, emo, techno, classical music and spoken word. The result is better described as stylistically restless than as a band that belongs neatly to one scene.
How did The 1975 become successful?
The available career evidence points to development and expanding reach rather than an overnight breakthrough. The members started with covers and local performances, then built a body of original work. Their changing musical approach gave successive records room to sound different without abandoning the band format at their centre.

A clear commercial marker came when Official Charts interviewed the band as they celebrated their second UK Official Albums Chart number one. That is a milestone reported at the time of the interview, not a statement of the group’s current chart position. It establishes success on that particular UK albums chart; it does not, by itself, identify their biggest singles or rank their hits.
How did The 1975 change their sound?
The band’s stylistic range is central to understanding their career. Apple Music’s account describes early work drawing on pop drama and shoegaze atmospherics, while later records widened the palette into several other forms. Rather than treating those influences as a checklist or claiming the band invented a genre, it is more useful to hear them as evidence of an evolving approach to arrangement and presentation.

From pop and shoegaze to a wider palette
The early combination of 1980s pop and shoegaze gave the group both scale and atmosphere. Later influences—including folk, UK garage, emo, techno and classical music—show how far they were willing to move between sounds. The presence of spoken-word material also reflects an interest in forms beyond conventional pop songs.
Notes on a Conditional Form and the album as a statement
Apple Music identifies Notes on a Conditional Form (2020) as the band’s fourth album: a 22-track release that includes spoken-word material from Greta Thunberg alongside a broad spread of musical styles. The scale and variety make it a useful example of the group treating an album as a space for contrasting ideas, not simply as a collection organized around one sound.

In a 2018 Music Week interview, manager and label boss Jamie Oborne framed that ambition in terms of the album’s place in the music business: “It’s only right that The 1975 are the band that makes the biggest statement about what an album is in this current situation in our history.” That is Oborne’s opinion about the band’s role and album-making, not an independent measurement of their influence.
What drugs was Matty Healy addicted to?
Healy has publicly said he was addicted to heroin. In 2018, the Irish Independent reported his account, while Music Week’s interview with Oborne discussed Healy’s heroin use, concern within the band’s circle and treatment in Barbados. These are attributed accounts from that period; they should not be expanded into a clinical history or taken as proof of a particular medical outcome.
Rank #4
It is also important not to make drug use a shortcut explanation for the band’s appeal. The interviews document a serious personal experience and the people around Healy’s response to it. They do not establish that addiction produced the band’s success, that treatment caused a specific record to succeed, or that a later artistic phase represents a medically defined recovery.

The song is linked in contemporary reporting to Healy’s experience of heroin addiction, making it a clear point where his personal story meets the band’s shared catalogue. The Irish Independent’s interview connects the subject to the song, and Music Week’s coverage discusses the addiction context around the same period. It is fair to describe the track as addressing addiction and as tied to Healy’s account.

That connection does not mean every lyric should be read as literal autobiography, or that one song explains every stage of the band’s history. It is a piece of songwriting shaped by a personal subject, not a clinical account or a guide to treatment.
What are The 1975’s biggest hits?
A reliable ranked list of the band’s biggest singles is not established by the sources cited here, so it would be misleading to present one as definitive. “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)” is especially relevant to the story of Healy’s addiction, but that connection is not evidence that it is the group’s top hit by sales, streams or chart performance.
For a measurable success point, the documented figure in this account is the band’s second UK Official Albums Chart number one, reported by Official Charts in its interview. Album-chart position and singles popularity are different measures; a ranking of the latter would require a dedicated singles-chart source and a clearly stated territory and time frame.
What does “rebirth” mean in The 1975’s story?
Here, rebirth is best understood as a cultural and artistic question, not a verified medical status. The records show a band broadening its sound, while Healy’s interviews made addiction and treatment part of the public narrative around the group. Those strands intersect in songs such as “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You),” but the available accounts do not establish a complete recovery timeline or a single turning point that explains the band’s later work.
