Passage du Désir is a 2024 country album released under the name Johnny Blue Skies, an identity associated with Sturgill Simpson. Reviewers hear heartache and emotional candor in its songs, while the changed artist name and the record’s musical range create a sense of renewal. “Metamodern heartache” is a useful interpretive frame for that tension—not an official genre label or a critical consensus.
What is Passage du Désir?
Released July 12, 2024, Passage du Désir is the first album issued as Johnny Blue Skies, the name associated with Simpson. The release date and track list appeared in contemporary announcement coverage, including NME’s announcement and the Koka Booth Amphitheatre announcement.
The title is French for “passage of desire.” In a March 21, 2025 interview feature, Le Monde reported that Simpson encountered the Passage du Désir in Paris and chose it as the album’s title. That gives the phrase a concrete place of origin as well as its evocative emotional resonance.
Why does heartache define its emotional character?
Heartache is a prominent critical way of describing the album, rather than a claim that every track tells the same kind of story. The Guardian’s review foregrounds heartache, and Pitchfork’s review discusses the album’s persona and emotional character. Together, those readings point to vulnerability as a key part of the record’s effect: the songs can feel exposed even as the name Johnny Blue Skies places some distance between the music and the familiar artist identity.

That gap helps explain the phrase “metamodern heartache” in the title. It describes an interpretive tension: direct feeling alongside a newly staged persona, sincerity without pretending the presentation is uncomplicated. It should not be mistaken for a settled genre category or a term all critics use.
How does Johnny Blue Skies relate to Sturgill Simpson?
The new name changes the frame, but critical coverage does not treat it as a clean break. Pitchfork connects the record to Simpson’s earlier albums, while AllMusic’s entry likewise argues that the album does not simply leave Simpson’s past behind. The result is better understood as a shift in presentation than as a denial of continuity: listeners encounter a distinct persona, while critics still hear a conversation with the work that preceded it.

One useful point of comparison is Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, Simpson’s earlier album. The relationship is not a ranking or a claim that the records share one fixed sound. It is a way to hear how Passage du Désir revisits questions of identity and emotional candor through a changed name and a different musical setting.
What does the music sound like?
The album’s range matters alongside its emotional directness. In its discussion of the opening track, Stereogum notes a mix of accordion, mandolin, and strings. That is a specific example, not a description of every song. AllMusic’s broader review offers another account of the album’s overall character. Taken together, the coverage supports hearing a varied palette rather than reducing the record to a single instrumental signature.

How to listen to it in relation to the earlier records
Rather than asking whether Passage du Désir is a reinvention or a return, listen for how those possibilities coexist:
- Continuity and reinvention: Notice what the Johnny Blue Skies identity changes, then consider the connections critics draw to Simpson’s earlier work.
- Emotional emphasis: Hear the heartache as a critical description of the album’s vulnerability, not as a blanket account of every track.
- Musical palette: Keep the opening track’s reported instrumentation in view as one example of the record’s range, rather than treating it as a template for the whole album.
This approach makes “metamodern” most useful as a listening lens: the album can be emotionally sincere while also inviting attention to the persona through which that sincerity is presented.
