NYT Strands puzzle #596, dated Monday, October 20, 2025, has the theme clue “It’s in the mail.” The answers are check-related words, and the spangram is CHECKLIST. Hints come first below; the full answer list is marked as a spoiler.
Hints for Strands #596
Use these in order, stopping when you have enough help:
- Theme clue: “It’s in the mail.”
- Theme direction: Think of something sent as payment, and the information written on it.
- Answer openings: The theme words begin with ME, AM, NU, RO, SI, and AD. The spangram begins with CH.
- Spangram route: CHECKLIST starts at the left edge on row four and reaches the right edge on row seven. Its path uses horizontal and vertical connections.
- Extra nudge: The puzzle’s secondary hint asks whether people still use this form of payment.
How the Strands hints work
Strands is a themed word-search game: connect adjacent letters to make the theme words. Found theme answers turn blue. The spangram names or captures the theme and stretches between two opposite sides of the grid. Finding three non-theme words earns an in-game hint, which reveals letters from a theme answer.
For this puzzle, CHASE, MESS, BUNCH, MORE, SNACK, and DUDE are clue words that unlock hints; they are not part of the final answer set.

The six theme answers are terms associated with a check, while CHECKLIST ties them together. “It’s in the mail” also evokes the expression “the check’s in the mail”—a way of saying that payment is on its way. The puzzle’s clue is an idiom-based hint, not a claim that checks are commonly mailed everywhere.
