Austin and Terry Taylor lost to Bobby Eaton and P.N. News after Eaton captured a flag. Dave Meltzer later savaged the bout in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter; calling it Austin’s definitive worst, however, remains a critical judgment rather than a settled career-wide ranking.
The leading candidate: Great American Bash 1991
Before he became “Stone Cold,” Austin was working in WCW as a member of the Hollywood Blonds. At the 1991 Great American Bash, he teamed with Terry Taylor in a scaffold match against Bobby Eaton and P.N. News, the ring name of Paul Neu. The retrospective by F4W/WON identifies the bout as arguably the event’s worst match and a candidate for the worst of Austin’s career. F4W/WON’s retrospective was published July 14, 2026.

Why the match drew such harsh criticism
The central problem was that the rules reportedly changed without that change being announced in the pre-match hype. The retrospective says victory could come either by knocking an opponent off the scaffold or by capturing the flag. Eaton’s flag grab therefore decided the bout through a condition viewers had not been clearly prepared to expect.
Dave Meltzer’s review, reproduced in F4W/WON’s retrospective, also objected to the lack of meaningful action and to a match concept that failed to make effective use of the performers’ abilities. His blunt verdict was: “This was among the worst matches in the history of pay-per-view television.” That is Meltzer’s assessment of the match, not an objective measurement of Austin’s whole career.

Is it objectively Austin’s worst match?
No source cited here establishes an objective, career-wide worst-match ranking for Austin. The scaffold bout is the clearest supported candidate in this account because the contemporary review criticized its confusing stipulation, weak execution, and poor use of the participants. Those criteria can help explain why the match stands out, but they are not a standardized scoring system. Other viewers may weigh match structure, clarity, performer strengths, and audience engagement differently.
The judgment also needs its historical context: this was a WCW match from 1991, years before Austin’s most famous WWE run. It should not be confused with a representative example of his later headline performances. WWE’s official Stone Cold Steve Austin content page lists selected matches and career material, but does not rank his worst bout.
