It shares Squid Game’s broad territory of survival-game fiction and social critique, but its central hook is different: duration, money and the shifting power among contestants—not a claim to be a sequel or a proven successor.
What is The 8 Show about?
Netflix’s official synopsis describes eight people trapped in a mysterious eight-story building who join a tempting but dangerous show: they earn money as time passes. The series premiered on May 17, 2024, and has eight episodes. Netflix’s launch announcement and its official series listing provide the premise and release details.
The cast includes Ryu Jun-yeol, Chun Woo-hee, Park Jeong-min, Lee Yul-eum, Park Hae-joon, Lee Zoo-young, Moon Jeong-hee and Bae Seong-woo. Han Jae-rim directed the series.
How is it different from Squid Game?
The comparison makes sense at a broad level: both are Korean dramas that use high-stakes contests to examine inequality and human behavior. But the mechanics and emphasis differ. In The 8 Show, contestants earn money as time passes, and the building’s social arrangement helps shape the contest. Netflix’s synopsis does not describe a sequence of survival games, so “Netflix’s next Squid Game” is best read as a promotional comparison—not a confirmed prediction of success or a connection between the stories.

| Question | The 8 Show | Squid Game comparison |
|---|---|---|
| What drives the contest? | Money accrues as time passes, according to Netflix’s synopsis. | The comparison is thematic; the available sources do not establish a formal connection. |
| What shapes the social order? | Eight participants occupy assigned rooms across eight floors. | Both works can be discussed as social-critique dramas, but the sources do not support treating their game structures as identical. |
| Where does the critique emerge? | Through the building’s hierarchy and power shifts within a small group. | TIME describes The 8 Show as a critique of capitalism and distinguishes its interest in power dynamics from a simple good-versus-evil divide. |
Why do the floors and stairs matter?
The building is more than a backdrop. Netflix’s art director Lee explained the floor arrangement this way: “The eight players go to their assigned rooms using the stairs, mirroring the capitalism-based disparity of the societal ladder.” The stairs make hierarchy physical: contestants share one structure, but do not occupy equivalent positions within it.
Director Han Jae-rim told TIME: “Instead of portraying a simple dichotomy of good and evil, the series is more about the formation of power dynamics that arise when a small society is created.” That focus points toward the drama’s central tension: how people negotiate power when a group is confined together and money gives those relationships stakes.

What is the series based on?
The 8 Show adapts Bae Jin-soo’s Naver webtoons Money Game and Pie Game. Netflix’s 2024 launch announcement reported 300 million global views for the source webtoons. That is Netflix’s announcement-era figure, not a current independently verified count. The series’ launch announcement identifies the source material and provides that figure.

If you’re looking for another Korean thriller built around a contest and social inequality, the comparison gives you a useful starting point—but not a guarantee that the experience or audience response will match Squid Game. The specific appeal here is the time-based premise and a contained society whose built-in hierarchy can influence who holds power. Netflix lists the series on its service; availability may vary by territory.
