The Atari ST’s 40th-anniversary framing marks its 1985 debut, not a single confirmed worldwide launch date. A Rhode Island Computer Museum collection record identifies it as Atari’s first 16-bit computer system and lists production from 1985 to 1993. To explore the machine’s gaming identity, Stuff writer Craig Grannell selected six games spanning arcade action, dungeon crawling, racing and futuristic sport.
Why the Atari ST’s 40th anniversary is tied to 1985
Craig Grannell’s Stuff feature, published on 25 July 2025, frames the Atari ST as 40 years old because it debuted in 1985. That anniversary shorthand does not establish one exact launch day for every market. The Rhode Island Computer Museum describes the ST as Atari’s first 16-bit computer system and gives its production span as 1985–1993 in its Atari ST collection record.
Grannell calls it a machine that was “part games machine, part serious workhorse, and part accidental rave enabler.” That is the feature author’s characterization, not an official Atari description. The broader company context is that Atari had produced home computers since 1979, according to the Computer History Museum’s Atari company history.
Six Atari ST games, and what kind of play they offer
The games below are Grannell’s editorial choices, presented to show distinctive aspects of the ST rather than as a proven objective ranking. The Stuff feature says its list emphasizes exclusives and firsts; it does not make every title an ST exclusive.

| Game | Year | Style of play | How the feature positions it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oids | 1987 | Twitchy arcade action built around gravity and rescue | One of the feature’s selections; the feature’s general emphasis includes exclusives and firsts, but the supplied account does not establish this title’s status as an ST exclusive. |
| Starglider 2 | 1988 | Space combat | One of the feature’s selections; exclusivity is not established in the feature account. |
| Llamatron 2112 | 1991 | Jeff Minter’s arcade reinterpretation | One of the feature’s selections; exclusivity is not established in the feature account. |
| Dungeon Master | 1987 | First-person dungeon crawling | One of the feature’s selections; exclusivity is not established in the feature account. |
| Vroom | 1991 | Racing | One of the feature’s selections; exclusivity is not established in the feature account. |
| Speedball II | 1990 | Futuristic sports | One of the feature’s selections; exclusivity is not established in the feature account. |
Which game should you start with?
There is no source-backed best-to-worst order for these six. Choose by the kind of game you want to play:
- For immediate arcade pressure: try Oids for gravity-and-rescue action or Llamatron 2112 for a Minter-style arcade reinterpretation.
- For a world to navigate: choose Starglider 2 for space combat or Dungeon Master for a first-person dungeon crawl.
- For competition at speed: pick Vroom for racing or Speedball II for futuristic team sport.
The ST’s identity beyond games
Grannell’s account treats the ST as both a work machine and a gaming platform, and highlights its built-in MIDI ports as an unusual part of its character. The feature connects them with music software including Cubase and Creator, which it says later evolved into Logic, and with multiplayer use in MIDI Maze. Those music-scene and artist-use points are the feature’s account; they should not be mistaken for independently established measures of how widely the ST was used in music production.
