There, a fox-mask festival gives her a new setting to observe—and fresh reasons to distrust the people around her. Spoilers follow for the episode’s premise and its official synopsis, not an unverified scene-by-scene ending.
What happens in “Festival”?
After being taken from the rear palace, Maomao arrives in a village hidden deep in a forest. A festival is underway, and she attends with Shisui, both wearing fox masks. On their way to the shrine, Shisui explains the local tradition and the meaning attached to the masks.
When they return, Maomao notices two details that do not sit right with her: she has not been restrained, and Suirei and Shisui are acting suspiciously. She confronts Suirei with a question. The official synopsis does not give the exact wording or describe the full outcome, so a more detailed account of that exchange would go beyond what is established.
Review: a festival Maomao cannot simply enjoy
The change of setting is the episode’s clearest shift. Instead of the rear palace, Maomao is in an isolated village, moving through a public ritual alongside Shisui. The fox masks and shrine-bound procession offer pageantry and local lore, but Maomao remains focused on the conditions of her captivity. Her attention to the fact that she is unrestrained turns an apparently small detail into a source of unease.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That contrast gives the festival sequence its tension: the village has traditions to explain, while Maomao has practical reasons to question what is happening around her. Her suspicion is grounded in what she observes—her freedom of movement and the behavior of Suirei and Shisui—rather than in any confirmed explanation of their motives. The episode’s official synopsis establishes that pivot, but not a definitive account of the village’s history or what the masks signify beyond Shisui’s explanation.
Who appears, and what does the episode adapt?
ORICON reports that Rika Fukami joins the cast as Shenmei, a mysterious character making her first appearance in this episode. The anime is based on Natsu Hyūga’s novels, but the available episode information does not identify a corresponding novel volume or chapter. Treat the novels as the broader source material, not a confirmed direct continuation point for episode 19.

Yes. The different numbers reflect listing conventions: Apple TV calls “Festival” season 2, episode 19, while the official Japanese anime site and Crunchyroll list it as episode 43 (E43). It is one episode, not two versions.
When did it air, and how long is it?
Listings vary by platform and market, so their dates and runtimes should not be treated as a single universal broadcast record.
