This spoiler recap follows the official episode synopsis; it is not a scene-by-scene transcript or a first-hand viewing review.
Spoilers ahead
The recap below discusses the episode’s central developments, including Luomen’s return and the mystery that prompts Maomao to investigate.
What happens in episode 16?
Luomen returns to help with Gyokuyou’s delivery
Luomen, Maomao’s medicinal mentor and adoptive father, comes to the rear-palace medical office to assist with Consort Gyokuyou’s delivery. Her pregnancy raises concern about a breech presentation, giving his return an immediate practical purpose.
A writing exercise revives an old memory
As Luomen quickly takes stock of problems in the rear palace, he prepares a model document for the women attending the writing school to copy as practice. When Maomao brings the model there, an elderly eunuch recalls that Luomen did similar work before he was expelled from the rear palace.

Maomao follows the inconsistency
The recollection does not fit neatly with what Maomao understands about Luomen’s history. She goes to visit someone to find out more, but the official synopsis does not identify that person. The episode’s hook is therefore not just that Luomen is back: it is that one small detail about his former life makes Maomao suspect there is more to learn.
Why the episode’s two threads matter
The official synopsis puts medical preparation and historical mystery side by side. Luomen’s attention to Gyokuyou’s delivery gives the story a concrete, immediate problem; his model document then connects his present work to an earlier period in the rear palace. Maomao’s curiosity grows out of that connection rather than arriving as a separate investigation.

That structure makes the episode’s tension quiet but purposeful. The writing-school detail is ordinary on its surface, yet the elderly eunuch’s memory gives it a new meaning. From the synopsis, the episode’s central question is what Maomao will uncover about Luomen’s past—not the identity of the person she visits, which the synopsis leaves unnamed.
How the title connects to the light novel
The English title, “Festering Resentment,” also appears in the contents of The Apothecary Diaries 04 light novel as “Festering Resentment (Part One)” and “Festering Resentment (Part Two).” The publisher’s description for the English paperback connects that volume with complications in Gyokuyou’s pregnancy and Maomao seeking help from someone unwelcome in the rear palace. This establishes a source-arc connection, but the novel is not an episode transcript.

Verdict
On the evidence of the official synopsis, episode 16 is a bridge between a pressing medical concern and a character-driven mystery. Its most effective story beat is the way a modest writing-school errand turns into a reason for Maomao to question what she knows about Luomen. The synopsis supports that reading of the episode’s setup, but not claims about its execution, dialogue, audience reception, or critical consensus.
