The Abandons Review: A More Intimate Western Rival to American Primeval

The Abandons is a family-centered frontier feud with a strong Headey-Anderson pairing—and a different focus from American Primeval’s wider survival drama.

The Abandons is a credible choice for viewers looking for another Netflix frontier drama after American Primeval, but it is not telling the same kind of story. Set in 1854 Washington Territory, it turns a silver-bearing land dispute into a feud between two families; American Primeval, set three years later, places survival amid broader conflict between cultures, religions, and communities at its center. The Abandons’ most immediate draw is the pairing of Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson. One published review, however, found that the seven-episode season did not give its wider cast and world enough room to develop.

What is The Abandons about?

The Abandons is a Western set in Washington Territory in 1854. Its conflict pits Fiona Nolan, who has built a found family, against the wealthy Constance Van Ness and her family. A parcel of land containing silver brings the dispute into focus, but the stakes extend to who gets power and a say in how frontier life is governed. Netflix’s official series description frames the show around these opposing families and their struggle for land and influence.

That family-and-property framework gives the series a more intimate engine than a story built around a region-wide crisis. Executive producer Christopher Keyser described its first chapter as a story of two families “both at war and in love with each other,” with a battle over land and who makes the rules, in Netflix Tudum’s series guide. That tension—personal bonds tangled with a contest for control—is the show’s clearest reason to watch.

How it compares with American Primeval

The two series share a frontier setting and a place on Netflix, so they may appeal to the same Western audience. Their narrative focus is different: The Abandons narrows its conflict to families, land, and class, while American Primeval uses survival and violent conflict among cultures, religions, and communities as its broader frame. Netflix’s guide to American Primeval describes it as a six-episode limited series set in 1857.

The format and runtime information for The Abandons comes from its Netflix series page; the episode count and premise for American Primeval are described in the Netflix Tudum guide. The comparison is about setting, genre, and story scale—not a claim that the shows are official rivals or interchangeable viewing.

What works, and what may not

The leads are the central attraction

Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson give the show its strongest point of distinction: the central feud is built around two formidable matriarchs rather than a single frontier hero. Netflix’s cast listing also names Nick Robinson, Diana Silvers, Aisling Franciosi, Lucas Till, Lamar Johnson, and Natalia del Riego among the performers. For viewers drawn to family power struggles, that ensemble and the clash between its two leading characters are the obvious hook.

The season may feel compressed

In a December 4, 2025 review, What’s on Netflix’s Ashley Hurst rated the series 3.5 out of 5. Hurst praised Headey and Anderson but argued that the seven episodes left the broader world and some characters underdeveloped. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus, but it identifies a practical trade-off: a wide cast and frontier setting have limited space to unfold in a short season. Read Hurst’s review for the full argument.

Is The Abandons worth watching?

Choose The Abandons if the appeal is a character-led Western about family allegiance, class, and contested land, especially one anchored by Headey and Anderson. Choose American Primeval if you want a limited series framed more broadly around survival and violent factional conflict. The titles share frontier terrain, but the kind of tension each foregrounds is distinct.
