The list follows Mika McKinnon’s 2015 Gizmodo selection, not a current ranking or a scientific assessment. Some movies make climate change a direct plot mechanism; others use it as allegory, comedy or adventure.
Mika McKinnon described “climate fiction, or cli-fi” as films “where changing climate drives the plot.” The eight titles below appeared in her December 10, 2015 article, in its original sequence. Their value as a watchlist is in the range of approaches they take—not in the scientific realism of every disaster they depict.

How the eight films approach climate catastrophe
| Film | Climate connection | Tone and best lens |
|---|---|---|
| Waterworld | Extreme sea-level rise submerges continents, leaving people to survive at sea. | Speculative waterworld adventure; treat the inundation as a dramatic premise, not a plausible projection. |
| Absolute Zero | A pole-shift premise triggers an abrupt ice age; the plot concerns orbital dynamics rather than climate change. | Made-for-TV disaster imitation of The Day After Tomorrow. |
| Frozen | A sudden ice age descends on Arendelle, caused by magic. | Fantasy that can be read allegorically, including as a story about collective response under uncertainty. |
| Kingsman: The Secret Service | The antagonist says mass killing is a way to address climate change. | Action-comedy; the climate rationale is a fictional villain’s motive, not a policy proposal. |
| Snowpiercer | A climate-engineering intervention backfires, producing an ice age. | Dystopian survival story focused on social hierarchy; its mechanism is fictional. |
| Sharknado | Climate change is used to explain a shark-filled hurricane. | Deliberately camp disaster comedy. |
| Ice Age | Characters try to keep up with a changing world, including advancing ice; the sequel includes a flood. | Animated adventure about adaptation, not realistic climate modeling. |
| The Day After Tomorrow | A rapid-onset climate-disaster premise leads to ice-covered landscapes. | Spectacle-driven disaster film that dramatically compresses timescales. |
What to watch for in each movie
Waterworld: a planet overtaken by water
Waterworld imagines a future in which rising seas have submerged continents and survivors make their lives at sea. Its striking climate image is the waterlogged world itself. That scale of inundation belongs to the film’s speculative setup; it should not be mistaken for a projection.
Absolute Zero: an ice-age premise, not a climate-change plot
In Absolute Zero, a pole shift triggers an abrupt ice age. McKinnon presents it as a made-for-TV imitation of The Day After Tomorrow, while drawing an important distinction: the story’s cause is an orbital-dynamics premise, not climate change. It sits on this list as a neighboring disaster movie rather than a straightforward cli-fi example.

#1 Best Overall
- Over the course of one evening, an unsuspecting group of twenty-somethings find themselves bombarded by a series of natural disasters and catastrophic events.
Frozen: climate as fantasy allegory
The sudden ice age in Frozen is magical, not scientific. Its climate connection is therefore interpretive: the crisis can be read as an allegory for how a community responds to uncertain conditions. It offers a different kind of climate story from films that present environmental disruption as their literal plot mechanism.
Kingsman: The Secret Service: a villain’s climate rationale
The climate element in Kingsman: The Secret Service is the antagonist’s stated intention to address climate change through mass killing. McKinnon singles out this unusual motivation in an action-comedy. It is a fictional rationale for a villain, not an endorsement or a real-world policy idea.
Rank #2
Snowpiercer: intervention, catastrophe and social order
Snowpiercer begins with a climate-engineering intervention that backfires into an ice age. The resulting story is about survival and social hierarchy. Its speculative mechanism sets up the drama; it is not a forecast of what climate engineering would do.
Sharknado: climate disaster played for laughs
Sharknado makes climate change an explanation for a shark-filled hurricane, then leans into the absurdity. McKinnon calls it a cli-fi camp classic. Go in expecting deliberate excess, not a serious account of climate impacts.

Ice Age: adaptation in an animated adventure
Ice Age follows characters trying to keep up with a changing world, including advancing ice; the sequel adds a flood. The climate connection is broad and adventure-oriented. The films are better approached as stories about adaptation than as climate models.
The Day After Tomorrow: rapid disaster for cinematic effect
The Day After Tomorrow is the list’s signature rapid-onset climate disaster, with ice-covered landscapes and a catastrophe unfolding on a dramatically shortened timescale. McKinnon describes its appeal as ranging from technical-sounding circulation collapse to the spectacle of trying to outrun the cold. That is her commentary on the film’s memorable premise, not a scientific assessment or an expectation of climate change’s pace.
Rank #4
Choosing a film from the list
- For a water-dominated speculative setting, start with Waterworld.
- For ice-age disaster spectacle, choose The Day After Tomorrow or Snowpiercer, keeping their fictional mechanisms and compressed drama in mind.
- For fantasy or allegory, try Frozen.
- For an intentionally comic take, choose Sharknado or Kingsman: The Secret Service.
- For animation centered on characters adapting to environmental change, choose Ice Age.
- For a disaster film adjacent to cli-fi rather than driven by climate change, consider Absolute Zero.
How to read this list
This is an entertainment selection published in 2015, not an updated consensus about the best climate films or a review of scientific accuracy. The movies differ in how directly climate drives the plot: some present it as the cause of catastrophe, while others use fantasy, comedy or a wider theme of adaptation. Keeping those distinctions clear makes the list more useful—and keeps cinematic disaster separate from climate evidence.
