A Minecraft Movie is a live-action adventure based on the video game, but its plot is an original story rather than a retelling of Minecraft gameplay. Here are seven useful facts about its premise, cast, reception, viewing formats and reported sequel plans.
1. It is a live-action adaptation of Minecraft
Directed by Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie adapts the block-building video game into a live-action feature with computer-generated elements. Warner Bros. lists its North American theatrical release as April 4, 2025, and international releases beginning April 2, 2025. Warner Bros.’ official movie page identifies the film as based on the game.

2. The film creates a plot for a game built around player choice
The movie tells a scripted adventure; it is not the story of the game. In an Associated Press interview published March 31, 2025, Hess said, “There’s no story to the game, so there was a lot of creative license to kind of come up with.” His comment describes the filmmakers’ adaptation challenge, not an official statement of game design.
3. The story sends outsiders into the Overworld
Warner Bros.’ synopsis describes a ragtag group drawn into Minecraft’s blocky Overworld, where they encounter Steve and face a threat from piglins. AP’s March 31, 2025 account adds that a cubic object connected to imagination pulls the newcomers through a portal, where they team up with Steve. That is the film’s premise, not a fixed quest from the game.

4. Jack Black plays Steve
Jack Black portrays Steve, with Jason Momoa among the film’s leads. The official credits also list Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge. The screenplay credits Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener and Gavin James, and Chris Galletta; the story is credited to Allison Schroeder with Bowman and Palmer. The official movie page lists the credits.
5. Critics and verified audience ratings differed on Rotten Tomatoes
On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 47% Tomatometer based on 195 reviews and an 84% Popcornmeter based on more than 10,000 verified ratings. Those are live aggregator snapshots, not permanent verdicts or a poll of every moviegoer. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus characterized Black and Momoa’s performances as amusing within a conventional adventure story; that wording represents the site’s summary, not every reviewer’s view. 6. Home formats are listed, but release details depend on region
The official movie site lists Digital, 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD, as well as a limited-edition SteelBook. Those formats do not guarantee that every edition is available in every country or in stock at a particular retailer.
For Japan specifically, Warner Bros. Japan lists digital purchase from August 8, 2025, rental from September 3, 2025, and a 4K Ultra HD two-disc release dated September 19, 2025. Its listing gives an approximately 101-minute runtime and approximately 55 minutes of bonus features. These are Japanese release details, not universal dates or specifications. Warner Bros. Rotten Tomatoes listed HBO Max subscription availability on its page when accessed October 8, 2026. Streaming catalogs vary by market and can change, so check the service in your country before subscribing specifically to watch the film.

On October 9, 2025, the Associated Press reported Warner Bros.’ plan for a sequel, with Jared Hess returning to direct and co-write. AP reported an intended theatrical date of July 23, 2027. That is a reported future schedule, not a guarantee that the date will hold. AP said no official sequel plot or cast had been revealed as of that report; that dated statement does not establish whether newer announcements have since been made.

How the film’s success was reported
In its October 9, 2025 sequel report, AP cited more than $957 million worldwide and $424 million domestically. These are box-office totals AP reported at that time, not a newly audited final accounting. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing accessed October 8, 2026 showed a U.S. gross of $423.9 million, a separate figure on a later live page.
