There is no official Marvel ranking of its greatest anti-heroes. This list uses a clear editorial frame instead: characters are weighed by their importance and longevity in Marvel comics, moral ambiguity, distinctive motives or identity, and the influence of stories built around them—not by who would win a fight. The first 10 follow ComicBook.com writer Shawn Lealos’s July 22, 2025 ranking; the remaining 35 are candidates for a broader list, not a source-verified ranking.
What makes a Marvel character an anti-hero?
“Anti-hero” is a flexible label, not an official Marvel category. ComicBook.com’s Shawn Lealos describes the type as people who do bad things while fighting villains. That framing captures the tension: an anti-hero may oppose a genuine threat but use methods, motives, or ethics that conventional heroes would reject. A character’s place on that spectrum can change between stories and creative eras, so no entry below should be read as a permanent verdict on every version.
This list gives priority to storytelling history and the force of a character’s moral conflict, alongside distinctiveness and longevity. Lealos’s 2025 ranking supplies the order for the first 10. The other names are an expanded editorial roster; the available source material does not establish their order or document a representative story for each. They are presented as candidates rather than as a definitive top 45.
The first 10: ComicBook.com’s 2025 ranking
-
Hulk
Lealos places Hulk first. The character’s changing position between hero and danger makes him a particularly clear example of why “anti-hero” depends on the story being discussed.

Ghost Rider ranks fifth. Marvel’s team-up page describes the character as “an unstoppable hand of retribution,” a concise expression of the punitive edge that distinguishes this figure from a conventional hero.

Where to start reading
For Deadpool
Marvel’s Deadpool reading list names New Mutants (1983) #98, Deadpool: The Circle Chase (1993) #1, and Deadpool (2024) #1 among its selections. The list spans different periods, making it a practical entry point for seeing how the character has been presented over time. Marvel’s editorial page introduces him with the phrase “He’s known as the Merc with a Mouth- why?”
For a team-up contrast
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost Rider team-up page includes Ghost Rider/Wolverine/Punisher: The Dark Design (1994) and Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance Alpha (2023) #1. Marvel characterizes Wolverine as “a virtually unkillable mutant warrior” and Ghost Rider as “an unstoppable hand of retribution,” a contrast that makes a team-up a useful way to explore different kinds of anti-heroism.

How to read the ranking
- It is an editorial selection. Marvel has not established an official top 45 in the cited material.
- The first 10 have a named source and date. They preserve Lealos’s July 22, 2025 order; that order remains one publication’s judgment.
- The expanded roster is provisional. The source material does not establish an evidence-backed ranking or representative comics for entries 11–45.
- Roles vary by story. For characters such as Hulk, Loki, and Magneto, the specific era and story matter more than a permanent hero-or-villain label.
