The best paranormal movies make the supernatural more than a scare: it can be a haunting that refuses explanation, a curse passed between strangers, or a force that changes how a family understands its past. This ranked list ranges across ghost stories, possession films, occult horror, folklore, and supernatural thrillers. The order is an editorial judgment based on lasting impact, strength of premise, atmosphere and craft, recognition, and range—not a poll or an objective formula.
What counts as a paranormal movie?
Here, paranormal is a broad storytelling category rather than a strict genre label. A film qualifies when ghosts, hauntings, possession, curses, occult forces, revenants, or other supernatural entities drive its story. That includes haunted-house films, folklore, and some supernatural thrillers; psychological horror without a supernatural event falls outside the list.

The ranking balances craft and influence with the clarity of each supernatural premise. It also makes room for different traditions: a Japanese ghost-story anthology offers a very different experience from a possession-centered American horror film.
The 30 best paranormal movies, ranked
1. The Exorcist (1973)
William Friedkin’s possession film remains a defining example of supernatural horror, building dread through a family’s ordeal and the efforts to understand what has taken hold of a young girl. The British Film Institute (BFI) lists it as a 1973 film directed by Friedkin, written and produced by William Peter Blatty, with a 122-minute runtime. BFI notes the story was inspired by a documented 1949 Maryland exorcism; that inspiration is not proof that the film’s supernatural events happened. Roger Ebert, as quoted by BFI in its film record, wrote: “If movies are, among other things, opportunities for escapism, then The Exorcist is one of the most powerful ever made. Rarely do movies affect us so deeply.” BFI film record

The American Film Institute reported that The Exorcist came first with 38% of the vote in its 2013 American Film reader poll. That was a poll of horror selections, not a paranormal-only ranking or a verdict on all horror viewers. AFI Halloween celebration
2. The Shining (1980)
Stanley Kubrick’s haunted-hotel story turns isolation into a source of menace. Its supernatural threat remains unsettling partly because the film leaves room for uncertainty about what the hotel is doing and what its characters bring with them. AFI includes it in its Halloween guide, and it placed second in the institute’s 2013 American Film reader poll described above.
3. Kwaidan (1964)
Masaki Kobayashi’s Japanese anthology adapts four ghost stories associated with Lafcadio Hearn. Its episodic structure lets each tale develop a distinct mood, making it one of the list’s richest encounters with supernatural folklore. BFI records a 163-minute British release and a later-restored 183-minute version, so runtimes depend on the edition. BFI film record
4. The Innocents (1961)
This gothic ghost story makes uncertainty part of its power: the haunting can be read as supernatural, psychological, or both. Its restrained approach helped shape later haunted-house cinema; BFI’s haunted-house guide discusses its influence on The Others. BFI haunted-house films
5. The Others (2001)
A mother and her children inhabit a house governed by rules, shadows, and a growing sense that they are not alone. The film’s quiet, controlled approach makes it a strong choice for viewers who prefer suggestion to explicit horror. BFI discusses it among notable haunted-house films.
6. The Haunting (1963)
Robert Wise’s classic haunted-house film makes the house itself the source of dread. Its psychological tension and careful use of sound and suggestion offer a different kind of fear from films that put a visible entity at the center.
Rank #2
7. Poltergeist (1982)
When malevolent spirits invade a family home, the ordinary routines of suburban life become part of the horror. Poltergeist brings a more overt, effects-driven supernatural threat to the haunted-house tradition. AFI includes it in its Halloween guide. AFI Halloween celebration
8. The Sixth Sense (1999)
M. Night Shyamalan’s supernatural thriller follows a child who sees the dead and a psychologist trying to help him. Its focus on the emotional consequences of that ability gives the ghost story a human center. AFI includes it in its Halloween guide.
9. Ju-on: The Grudge (2002)
This Japanese cursed-house story draws its horror from a place where violence leaves a supernatural mark. Its accumulating dread and haunting imagery helped make J-horror a major influence on international horror audiences. BFI’s haunted-house guide discusses the film and its place in the tradition.
10. Ring (1998)
Hideo Nakata’s cursed-media ghost story turns a videotape into a conduit for supernatural terror. Its investigative structure and slow-building menace helped define the late-1990s wave of Japanese supernatural horror. BFI discusses the broader supernatural revival and haunted-house tradition in its guide to the genre.
11. The Changeling (1980)
A grieving musician moves into a house with a violent past and begins to uncover what happened there. The film’s mystery-driven structure makes the haunting feel like a puzzle as well as a threat.
12. The Orphanage (2007)
In this Spanish-language ghost story, a woman returns to the orphanage where she grew up as her son becomes involved with unseen playmates. Its supernatural premise is inseparable from a mother’s fear and grief. GamesRadar’s horror-film ranking

13. A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)

14. The Devil’s Backbone (2001)
Set during the Spanish Civil War, Guillermo del Toro’s ghost story brings a child’s haunting into a world already shaped by violence and loss. The supernatural presence gives the film an eerie mystery while deepening its historical tragedy.
15. The Wailing (2016)
Na Hong-jin’s Korean mystery-horror begins with disturbing events in a rural community and expands into a struggle involving suspected possession and occult forces. Its uncertainty is central to the experience: the film asks viewers to weigh competing explanations rather than settle quickly on one.
16. The Witch (2015)
Robert Eggers’ folk horror centers on a family living under the threat of witchcraft and diabolic belief in 17th-century New England. It belongs here because supernatural forces are central to the story, even as fear and suspicion shape what the characters think they see.
17. Carrie (1976)
Brian De Palma’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel combines supernatural telekinesis with the cruelty of a high-school coming-of-age story. Carrie’s powers are not a vague mood or metaphor alone; they drive the film’s escalating horror. AFI calls out the film’s supernatural premise in its Halloween guide.
18. The Omen (1976)
This demonic horror story turns a child’s identity into a source of dread, building its threat through signs, suspicion, and religious prophecy. AFI recognizes it among its Halloween selections.
Rank #4
19. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

20. The Conjuring (2013)
Built around investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren and a family’s haunted home, James Wan’s film blends a possession story with a curse. BFI describes its Warren investigators and witch-curse premise in its historical horror survey. BFI horror survey

22. The Babadook (2014)
A mysterious children’s book introduces a threatening presence into a mother and son’s home. The Babadook works both as a supernatural entity and as a story open to psychological and allegorical readings; that ambiguity is part of its appeal rather than a reason to exclude it.
23. It Follows (2014)
A young woman becomes the target of a relentless supernatural pursuer that can appear as an ordinary person. The film turns a curse into a simple, unnerving rule: the threat keeps coming, and recognizing it does not make it easy to escape.
24. The Devil Rides Out (1968)
This British occult horror follows a struggle against demonic forces and ritual magic. Its focus on occult belief and a supernatural adversary makes it a useful counterpoint to ghost stories and haunted houses.

28. Lake Mungo (2008)
This Australian mockumentary follows a family dealing with a haunting and grief after a death. Its documentary-style investigation makes the supernatural feel like something the family is trying to document and understand, not simply fight.
