Anime spans a wide range of stories and maturity levels, so the art style or genre alone cannot tell you whether a show is right for a particular tween or teen. Common Sense Media’s list, updated October 7, 2026, offers useful starting points—but the examples below are not a verified list of 45 titles. Check the specific show and version your family plans to watch, then weigh its content against the viewer’s age and maturity.
How to use age ratings and content notes
An age suggestion is a screening aid, not a universal rule. Common Sense Media provides suggested ages and title-specific descriptions; its guidance can help narrow choices, but it recommends reading full reviews before deciding. VIZ says its categories are subjective internal assessments for general guidance, not a regulatory standard. TV ratings use a different system and describe content rather than deciding what is suitable for an individual child.
For example, the American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren guide says TV-PG may include moderate violence, some sexual situations, infrequent coarse language, or suggestive dialogue. TV-14 may include more intense violence, sexual situations, coarse language, or suggestive dialogue. Those descriptors are prompts for closer consideration, not a verdict about a particular viewer.
Anime picks to consider by age and interest
The following examples and suggested ages come from Common Sense Media’s list, updated October 7, 2026. The ages are that organization’s recommendations, not universal ratings. Read the linked title descriptions and full reviews for more detail; where a specific concern is not noted here, that should not be taken as proof that none is present.

TV ratings may differ from one episode to another, and an edit or channel can change the rating for the same program. Check the rating attached to the version or service your family will actually watch rather than assuming one series-wide label applies everywhere. The TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board explains this episode- and version-level variation at TVGuidelines.org.

Before choosing a show, consider what matters most for the particular viewer: violence, sexual content, language, suggestive dialogue, drinking, body-image themes, or emotional intensity. Previewing an episode and discussing any concerns can help caregivers make a more informed choice; anime’s broad range means that one title’s suitability says little about another’s. Screenwise’s parent guide offers additional practical context, while title-specific reviews and the relevant rating source are better for checking a particular show.
