There is no well-supported, current ranking here of 15 overrated anime and 10 overlooked ones. The available evidence does not establish which shows belong on those lists or in what order, so naming 25 titles as if their reputations and visibility had been checked would be misleading. What can be assessed is how to make that comparison fairly—and why awards, ratings and online discussion do not settle it.
What “overrated” and “overlooked” should mean
“Overrated” is a judgment about a gap: a show’s reputation, awards or fan enthusiasm appears greater than its storytelling, characters, pacing, animation or other qualities warrant. That judgment needs both sides of the comparison. A title’s popularity alone is not evidence that it is overrated.
“Overlooked” is different. A series can be highly rated by a smaller audience while attracting less discussion or recognition than its quality merits. Low visibility is not the same as a low rating, and a claim of being overlooked needs evidence of both the show’s merit and the visibility gap.
What awards can—and cannot—tell you
Crunchyroll named Solo Leveling Anime of the Year at the 2025 Anime Awards; Delicious in Dungeon and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End were among the nominees. The awards combine jury and audience input. Crunchyroll’s 2026 guide says judges determine nominees in the first round, then judges and fans vote for winners in the second. Why online debate is not a ranking dataset
Individual Reddit posts show how fans frame the question, including “What is the most underrated and underated anime ?” and “What’s the most underrated anime of the decade (2015–2025)?” One contributor described underratedness as a gap between perceived quality and average rating. What makes a specific case persuasive
A useful case compares a defined series or adaptation with evidence for its reputation, then explains the writer’s assessment of its execution. It also states the audience or genre expectations involved: a slow character drama and a fast action series should not be judged by identical pacing standards. Any claim about current attention should be dated and supported separately from claims about quality.
Delicious in Dungeon offers a concrete example of how to describe appeal without declaring a show overlooked. Crunchyroll’s 2025 nominee spotlight highlights its dungeon exploration, cooking monsters, party dynamics and protagonist’s distinctive interests, as well as its manga source.
