The list moves from intimate dramas to franchise action and sharp-edged comedy; it is an editorial judgment, not a consensus score. A critics’ film ranking and a ranking of Lawrence’s performances measure different things, so neither supplies a definitive order.
How this ranking works
Each placement balances three considerations: the strength of the film, what Lawrence brings to her role, and the title’s place in her career. The Academy’s awards record helps identify landmark performances, while broader filmography and critics’ lists provide context—not a formula for settling the order. Rotten Tomatoes orders films by Tomatometer, whereas The Guardian’s 2022 list ranks performances; a strong film and a standout performance are related, but not interchangeable, measures.

The 13 best Jennifer Lawrence movies
-
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Lawrence’s performance as Tiffany gives this romantic comedy-drama its volatile, funny, and unexpectedly tender center. The film’s mix of difficult emotions and lively chemistry makes it a strong whole, not just a showcase for its lead. It is also her defining awards milestone: the Academy lists Lawrence as the winner of the lead-actress Oscar for the film.
-
Winter’s Bone (2010)
This spare Ozarks-set drama depends on Lawrence’s guarded, determined performance as Ree, a teenager searching for her missing father while trying to keep her family together. Its scale is intimate, but its tension is relentless. The Academy recognized Lawrence with a lead-actress nomination, marking an early career breakthrough.

-
American Hustle (2013)
As Rosalyn, Lawrence brings comic unpredictability and danger to David O. Russell’s ensemble crime satire. The film thrives on its performers’ collisions, and her supporting turn is one of its most memorable sources of disruption. The Academy nominated her in the supporting-actress category.
-
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)
The second Hunger Games film sharpens the series’ political stakes while giving Lawrence room to show Katniss as a reluctant symbol who understands the cost of resistance. Its stronger sense of momentum and escalation makes it the most compelling franchise entry on this list.

-
Causeway (2022)
Lawrence plays Lynsey, a soldier returning home after a traumatic brain injury, in a restrained character drama built around recovery and an unlikely friendship. The film favors small gestures over speeches, and Lawrence’s subdued performance suits its careful emotional register. It shows a quieter, later phase of her screen work.
-
Joy (2015)
In this biographical drama, Lawrence plays Joy Mangano, an inventor and entrepreneur navigating family pressure and the challenge of building a business. The film is uneven, but its focus on a woman insisting on her own ambitions gives Lawrence a vivid lead role. The Academy nominated her for lead actress; its 2016 fact sheet called it her fourth nomination at that time, not a current career total.

Saw: 8-Film Collection - DVD- Let the games begin! Own the genre-defining Saw horror series in all its grisly glory. Five-disc set includes: Saw (2004), Saw II (2005), Saw III (2006), Saw IV (2007), Saw V (2008), Saw VI (2009), Saw: The Final Chapter (2010) and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010).

-
mother! (2017)
Darren Aronofsky’s psychological horror allegory is designed to unsettle rather than reassure. Lawrence carries the film as a woman whose home and sense of control are steadily invaded. It is a demanding, divisive watch, but her increasingly desperate performance gives the film its human point of entry.
-
The Hunger Games (2012)
The film that introduced Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen makes the character’s survival instinct and protective streak the anchor of a large-scale dystopian story. Lawrence gives the spectacle a grounded emotional core, helping establish the franchise’s central conflict as more than a contest for survival.

American Hustle is not the only ensemble highlight; Passengers (2016)
Lawrence stars opposite Chris Pratt in this space-set romantic science-fiction drama as Aurora Lane, a writer awakened far too early on a long voyage. Its premise raises difficult questions about consent and choice, which complicate the romance at the film’s center. The morally fraught setup makes it more interesting to discuss than a conventional star vehicle, even where its resolution divides viewers.
-
Don’t Look Up (2021)
Lawrence plays astronomer Kate Dibiasky in Adam McKay’s satirical disaster comedy, an ensemble film about a world that refuses to respond sensibly to an approaching catastrophe. Her blunt, increasingly exasperated character provides a useful counterweight to the media circus around her. The film’s broad satire is uneven by design and not every joke lands, but Lawrence gives its urgency a human face.

No Hard Feelings (2023)
This R-rated comedy casts Lawrence as Maddie, a woman hired by a couple to help their socially withdrawn son gain confidence before college. The film gives her a playful change of pace from the dramas and franchises that define much of her career. Its comic risks work best when Lawrence commits fully to Maddie’s awkward, brazen, and unexpectedly vulnerable side.
-
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014)
The series shifts from arena survival to propaganda and rebellion, with Katniss struggling to become a public figure while carrying private grief. The slower, more political story is less propulsive than Catching Fire, but it offers Lawrence a different challenge: showing how a reluctant hero reacts when others try to shape her image.
-
Like Crazy (2011)
In this low-key romantic drama, Lawrence has a supporting role in a story about a long-distance relationship strained by immigration rules and time apart. It belongs near the end of the ranking because her part is smaller than in the films above, not because it lacks a place in her early filmography. Its modest scale offers a contrast to the studio franchises and awards-season dramas that later became career landmarks.
Why the order differs from other rankings
Rotten Tomatoes’ Jennifer Lawrence guide sorts films by Tomatometer, a measure of critics’ reviews, while The Guardian’s 2022 article ranks her performances. Those approaches can elevate a film for its overall reception or a role for Lawrence’s work in it, respectively. This list gives weight to both, along with career significance, so its sequence is a considered editorial ranking rather than a claim of universal agreement.
Sources and career context
The Academy’s 88th Awards Fact Sheet records Lawrence’s Oscar win for Silver Linings Playbook and nominations for Winter’s Bone, American Hustle, and Joy. It was published by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2016; its nomination count is historical. The AFI Catalog and Golden Globes biography provide filmography and career context across her independent dramas, David O. Russell collaborations, The Hunger Games films, and later roles.
