There is no agreed industry-wide ranking of the best 2025 movies adapted from books. This is an editorial selection, not a definitive top ten: the available coverage supports eight candidates, not ten equally well-documented entries. Rather than invent two more, this ranking weighs how well each film works on its own, what it does with its source, its performances and direction, and the critical response described in the cited reviews.

2025 book-to-screen adaptations worth watching

The entries below are ranked by those criteria, with the ranking presented as judgment rather than consensus. A book adaptation can closely follow its source or use it as a launch point for a different story; fidelity alone is not a measure of quality.

  1. Hamnet

Chloé Zhao’s film adapts Maggie O’Farrell’s novel about a tragedy in the Shakespeare family. Jessie Buckley plays Agnes and Paul Mescal plays William Shakespeare. O’Farrell co-wrote the screenplay with Zhao, giving the film a direct connection to the novel while moving its literary interiority into performance and visual storytelling. TheWrap’s coverage of Hamnet identifies the source and the screenwriting collaboration. The combination of that collaboration and the central performances makes it the strongest adaptation in this ranking.

  2. One Battle After Another

Paul Thomas Anderson adapts Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland, but the film is not presented as a close transfer of the novel: TheWrap describes the book as a jumping-off point for a new tale of revolution and family. That makes it a particularly clear example of adaptation through transformation. TheWrap’s review discusses the relationship to Pynchon’s source.

  3. The Long Walk

Francis Lawrence’s film is based on Stephen King’s novel. TheWrap’s reviewer says the adaptation improves on the book in some ways; that is the reviewer’s assessment, not an objective measure of superiority. Its place here reflects the case for treating an adaptation as a work in its own right rather than grading it solely on fidelity. Read TheWrap’s review of The Long Walk.

  4. The Monkey

Osgood Perkins expands Stephen King’s short story, first published in the collection Skeleton Crew, into a feature about a toy monkey associated with death. Kirkus describes the result as both madcap and meditative: an expansion in tone and scope, not simply a literal rendering of the story. Kirkus’s 2025 film selections identify the source and characterize the adaptation.

  5. Dog Man

The animated film draws on multiple volumes of Dav Pilkey’s children’s series rather than adapting a single book. Kirkus praises its balance of comic chaos and emotional moments, a useful measure of whether the screen version can satisfy as a film while retaining the series’ spirit. Kirkus’s year-end selections discuss the adaptation.

  6. The Thursday Murder Club

Netflix’s 2025 film is based on Richard Osman’s bestselling novel. That connection is clearly established, though the cited official material does not offer the same critical comparison of film and book available for some entries above. Netflix’s title announcement identifies the source novel.

  7. The Woman in Cabin 10

Netflix’s film adapts Ruth Ware’s 2016 novel. The platform’s announcement confirms the source, and Netflix also reported a publisher’s account of the book’s sales response: Jennifer Bergstrom, SVP & Publisher at Gallery Books & Scout Press, said sales rose 190% year over year and that 2.3 million copies were in circulation in the United States. The statement does not specify a more precise comparison window, and it is a publisher figure quoted by Netflix—not evidence that screen adaptations generally produce a particular sales increase. Netflix’s report on book sales and adaptations provides the attribution.

  8. The Running Man

Edgar Wright’s 2025 film is a new adaptation of Stephen King’s story, originally published under the name Richard Bachman, following the 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger film. JustWatch lists a November 7, 2025 theatrical date; release dates can differ by territory, so that date should not be read as universal. JustWatch’s guide to movies based on books identifies the source and gives its U.S. release listing.

How different can a 2025 adaptation be from its book?

There is no single rule. One Battle After Another uses Vineland as a starting point for a new story, while Hamnet brings its novelist into the screenplay alongside its director. The Monkey expands a short story, and Dog Man draws on several volumes. These are distinct adaptation strategies, not a simple scale from faithful to unfaithful. For a related example outside this film ranking, TheWrap notes that Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty television series departs from her book trilogy. TheWrap’s discussion of the series describes that departure.

Should you read the book before watching?

Not necessarily. If the appeal is seeing how a writer’s language or interior perspective becomes performance and images, reading first can make comparisons richer; Hamnet is a natural choice for that approach. If you would rather encounter the screen version without knowing the plot, watch first and read afterward. For heavily transformed adaptations such as One Battle After Another, reading the source can illuminate the connection without making the film’s relationship to the novel a test of fidelity.
