That finding is about the screenshot—not the separate claim about surgery, which the report did not establish as true or false.
What was fake?
Gizmodo reported that the screenshot circulated as if it showed St. Clair confirming the rumor in a deleted post. The report attributed the screenshot to the X account @marionumber4, then named 679 Enthusiast, and said the account’s creator had previously confirmed to Gizmodo that they make fake tweets. In this case, the deleted-post presentation was part of the hoax, not evidence that St. Clair had published the post. Gizmodo’s report
This provenance is what the report states; a screenshot by itself cannot verify that a post existed or that the person named in it wrote it.
Does that settle the surgery rumor?
No. The screenshot fact-check and the underlying surgery claim are separate questions. Gizmodo said it could not definitively determine whether Elon Musk had the alleged surgery, and reported that Snopes had reviewed the claims in February 2025 without reaching a definitive answer. The report does not establish that surgery occurred, that it was botched, or that St. Clair confirmed it.

Gizmodo described the rumor’s circulation, including an X user’s February 20 post about an implant and musician Azealia Banks writing, “Grimes told me this too.” That is a reported secondhand comment, not independent confirmation or direct evidence of a medical claim.
What about the Grok reply and an NDA?
Gizmodo recounted an X user asking Grok whether the screenshot was real and receiving a reply that introduced an alleged NDA. The article characterized the NDA reference as apparently a joke and said it was not publicly known whether an NDA existed. A chatbot response is not evidence that an agreement exists, nor does it verify the surgery rumor.

How to read claims like this
- Separate the evidence questions: evidence that a screenshot is fabricated does not answer whether the separate claim it repeats is true.
- Look for direct, reliable confirmation: reposts, screenshots styled as deleted posts, and secondhand comments do not independently establish a medical claim.
- Keep the conclusion narrow: Gizmodo’s report supports calling this screenshot fake; it does not resolve the underlying rumor.
