“Trump take egg” is a deliberately broken-grammar political meme that surfaced on Bluesky in February 2025, when egg shortages and high prices made eggs a vivid symbol of the gap between promises to lower grocery costs and what shoppers were seeing. The phrase is both an absurd little joke and a pointed assignment of political blame—not proof that one president alone caused egg prices.
Where did “Trump take egg” come from?
Fast Company reported that editor Michael Tae Sweeney made the first recorded post using the phrase on Bluesky on February 4, 2025. Sweeney said he had visited a Costco in southeast San Diego and encountered shoppers rushing to buy eggs amid purchase limits and empty shelves. “First recorded” describes what the publication documented; it does not establish that no earlier private or unindexed version existed.
The phrase circulated with images of empty egg cases, high price tags and rationing signs. Fast Company described it spreading from Bluesky to X and TikTok. The New Yorker also characterized it as a rallying cry attached to empty shelves and rising-price graphs.
Why is the wording funny?
The phrase sounds like a caveman-style fragment: Trump take egg. Its grammar is intentionally unnatural, and its blunt, almost nonsensical quality makes it easy to repeat. The humor comes partly from that absurd simplicity: an unwieldy political and economic argument gets compressed into three odd words.

But the joke has a target. Eggs were a visible household expense, and the phrase put Donald Trump’s name beside a problem after campaign promises to bring down grocery costs. As Mashable explained, it poked at voters’ expectations that Trump would fix prices as well as at the political fixation on egg costs. The New Yorker and Fast Company describe the meme’s use as extending into broader complaints about the administration.
What was happening with egg prices?
The meme took off during a period of egg shortages and elevated prices. Mashable reported that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ January 2025 average price was nearly $5 per dozen, describing it as a historic high. That is a historical figure for January 2025, reported by Mashable—not a current price.

The reporting also discusses avian flu as a major supply factor. That matters because the meme’s political blame is satire and rhetoric, not an economic analysis proving that a president alone caused the price rise. The slogan turns a complicated situation into a punchline; it should not be mistaken for a complete account of why eggs became scarce or expensive.
How did “Trump take ___” become a template?
Once the cadence caught on, users substituted other subjects into the phrase to point at different frustrations. Fast Company described “Trump cause traffic” as one adaptation. In March 2025, “Trump take nest egg” applied the construction to savings and markets amid tariff news. That was an example of the meme’s evolution at the time, not a current update on markets.

The variations keep the same deliberately simple grammar while changing the complaint. “Egg” tied the original joke to grocery prices; “nest egg” shifted the wordplay toward personal savings. The format’s flexibility helped it travel beyond a single set of empty shelves.
Where else did the meme appear?
Early reporting described the phrase and its variations on Bluesky, X and TikTok. Fast Company also reported that a Virginia taqueria used the meme to promote a buy-one-get-one breakfast-taco deal. That local promotion shows how the joke crossed from social posts into everyday marketing, rather than making the restaurant promotion a recommendation or a defining part of the meme.

What Sweeney said about the joke’s appeal
Sweeney told Fast Company: “Unlike a lot of problems in the government that Trump’s incompetence is causing, this one is very easy to point out and self-evidently a problem even to people who don’t pay attention to politics.” His point was that grocery prices offered an immediate, concrete way to make a political argument—one that did not require readers to follow more complicated policy disputes.
