The often-repeated figure of £26.5 million is a historical estimate, not a confirmed fortune or estate balance—and Pratchett himself challenged the assumptions behind it.
Is Terry Pratchett’s net worth publicly known?
No verified public figure establishes Pratchett’s personal wealth or the value of his estate. The material available does not provide an audited net-worth total, estate inventory, current royalty income, rights valuation, or details of inheritance distributions.
Those figures are not interchangeable. Net worth depends on assets and liabilities; an estate’s value is assessed at a particular time and can reflect debts, taxes, and other obligations. The commercial value of a literary property is also not the same as the author’s personal wealth. Without financial records and details of rights ownership, publishing success cannot establish a reliable total.
Where did the £26.5 million estimate come from?
The figure appeared in newspaper coverage as an “Estimated wealth of sci-fi novelist Terry Pratchett” and was attributed by Pratchett to a survey by Business Age. A response reproduced in The Annotated Pratchett File says his agent contacted the magazine and criticizes assumptions including extrapolating US sales from UK sales.

Pratchett’s central objection was that the calculation appeared to estimate the speculative value of Discworld rights, possibly including film rights, rather than report his wealth. As he put it, “the estimate is of ‘worth’, not ‘wealth’”—and the rights valuation was, in his words, a “wild guess.” The quotation is reproduced in the annotated reference, not presented here as a separate audited figure or competing valuation. Read the reproduced response in The Annotated Pratchett File (PDF).
For that reason, £26.5 million should not be described as a verified net worth, the value of his estate at death, an inheritance, or cash he held. No precise current-currency conversion or “at death” total is established by the cited material.

What do his book sales tell us?
Pratchett’s career was exceptionally successful, but sales figures do not disclose how much an author personally earned or retained. Bloomsbury’s undated author page, accessed in 2026, reports 70 million worldwide book sales and translations into 37 languages. These are publisher-reported career figures, not audited estate accounts or a measure of Pratchett’s personal wealth. See Bloomsbury’s Terry Pratchett author page.
Pratchett’s estate biography says he wrote over fifty books. His first novel, The Carpet People, was published in 1971; the first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic, followed in 1983. Those milestones help explain the scale and longevity of his literary career, but they do not supply the royalty rates, contract terms, expenses, taxes, liabilities, or rights arrangements needed to calculate wealth. What can the official biography confirm?
Terry Pratchett: A Life with Footnotes, written by Rob Wilkins and published in 2022, is identified by the estate as the official biography. Its official page presents biographical context; it does not claim to disclose an audited net-worth figure. See the estate’s page for the official biography.
Pratchett died on 12 March 2015, according to The Guardian’s obituary. The obituary also describes his publishing path, including Colin Smythe’s move from publisher to agent as Pratchett’s readership grew. This is career history, not evidence of an estate valuation. Read The Guardian obituary.
