Tenacious D’s 2024 Australian tour stopped after Kyle Gass made a remark about Donald Trump during a Sydney concert. A Newcastle show was postponed first; Jack Black then said he no longer felt it appropriate to continue the tour. In January 2026, Gass said he and Black had repaired their friendship and that the band would return, but no comeback date was established in that report.
What happened at the Sydney concert?
During Tenacious D’s 14 July 2024 show at the ICC Theatre in Sydney, Jack Black asked bandmate Kyle Gass to make a birthday wish. Gass replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” referring to the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the previous day. Video of the exchange circulated online. ABC News / Double J reported the incident and its immediate aftermath.

How did the Australian tour stop?
On 16 July, Frontier Touring announced that the Newcastle show was postponed, hours before doors were due to open. The band had also been scheduled to play Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide in the following days. Black then said he had been blindsided by Gass’s remark, would not condone hate speech or political violence, and no longer felt it appropriate to continue the tour. He also said future creative plans were on hold. ABC News / Double J reported Black’s statement and the tour update.
What did Jack Black and Kyle Gass say?
Jack Black’s response
Black’s statement, as reported by ABC, said: “I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold.” This describes Black’s stated response to the incident; it does not establish Gass’s private intent. Kyle Gass’s apology
Gass apologized for the improvised line, calling it “highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake,” and said he did not condone violence. That is Gass’s own description of his remark and position. ABC News / Double J reported his apology.
Did Tenacious D break up?
The July 2024 reporting said future creative plans were on hold; it did not report a formal announcement that the duo had permanently broken up. Tenacious D is the comedy-rock duo of Black and Gass. Their third album, The Rize of the Fenix, was a Top 10 chart hit in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and across Europe, as ABC News / Double J noted in its coverage. The cited coverage does not establish a performance date or itinerary. Louder reported Gass’s comments; MusicRadar also covered the interview.
