Why People Are Canceling Streaming Services in 2025

Streaming cancellations reflect price pressure, unused subscriptions and viewers leaving after finishing the content they wanted. But many subscribers return later, so churn is not always a permanent exit.

People are canceling streaming services because monthly costs are rising faster than the value many households feel they get from each subscription. But “churn” does not always mean viewers are giving up streaming: many subscribe for a show, watch it, cancel, and later return. Evidence from 2025 shows meaningful cancellation and signs of increased intent to cancel, but not a uniform rise across every measure.

How widespread are streaming cancellations?

Deloitte’s 2025 Digital Media Trends survey found that 39% of respondents had canceled at least one paid subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service in the previous six months. Deloitte describes that measure as relatively stable over several years, rather than steadily climbing. Its separate finding that 24% canceled a service and renewed that same service within six months shows why a cancellation does not necessarily mean a permanent departure. Deloitte, 2025 Digital Media Trends

Other surveys point to rising cancellation intent, but ask different questions. EY reported that 38% of streaming households had canceled or planned to cancel at least one platform, up from 35% a year earlier. That combined measure includes future plans; it is not directly comparable with Deloitte’s measure of completed cancellations in the prior six months. EY, 2025 connected-consumer research

Why are people canceling streaming services?

Monthly costs feel harder to justify

Cost was a leading reason among people who had canceled: 66% of cancelers in a YouGov poll said cost was a factor. The online poll surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults on September 9, 2025, and reported an overall margin of error of 3%. This is a finding about respondents who had canceled a service, not about all streaming subscribers. YouGov, 2025

Deloitte’s survey offers a related but distinct measure: 47% said they paid too much for streaming services. In the same report, 41% said SVOD content was not worth its price, up five percentage points from the previous year. The difference matters: a service can be affordable in absolute terms yet still feel like poor value if a household rarely watches it or has few appealing titles available.

For a favorite ad-free service, Deloitte respondents considered US$14 a month “just right” and US$25 “too much.” Deloitte also reported that surveyed households’ average payment for four paid SVOD services rose 13%, from about US$61 to US$69 per month. These are survey findings, not a price list or a recommended budget; actual plans and prices vary. Deloitte, 2025 Digital Media Trends

Viewers finish the show they came for

Some subscriptions are tied to a particular series, season, or event. YouGov found that 26% of cancelers said they had already watched the content they were interested in. EY likewise identified watching a service less than before as a cancellation rationale for 17% in both 2024 and 2025; the share citing the loss of favorite content rose from 10% to 12% in those reported years. YouGov, 2025 EY, 2025 connected-consumer research

This helps explain why cancellations can follow a hit show or a period of heavy viewing. The household may not be rejecting streaming as a whole; it may simply have reached the end of what it wanted to watch on that service for now.

Too many services make pruning appealing

Ipsos reported that six in ten respondents thought there were too many streaming services. Separately, YouGov found that 36% of U.S. adults had at least one active streaming service they had not used in the previous six months. Together, these findings suggest that some households may trim subscriptions when managing several services feels burdensome, though they do not prove that subscription overload caused any individual cancellation. Ipsos, April 11, 2025 YouGov, 2025

Canceling can be a pause, not a permanent exit

Kantar calls the pattern “subscribe, watch, cancel, repeat.” Its 2025 report says 46% of U.S. consumers showed this behavior during the previous 12 months, compared with 23% in the U.K. Deloitte’s finding that 24% canceled and then renewed the same service within six months points in the same direction. The populations and measures differ, but both show why cancellation totals should not be read as a count of viewers who have permanently abandoned streaming. • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

Rotation also clarifies how services can experience cancellations alongside new sign-ups. A subscriber may leave when a show ends and return when another title becomes available. For viewers, this can be a way to align payments with what they actually watch; for providers, it means keeping subscribers engaged between major releases is part of the challenge.

How streaming services are responding

Lower-priced ad-supported plans

Deloitte found that 54% of surveyed SVOD subscribers had at least one ad-supported service, up eight percentage points year over year. The average ad-supported tier in its findings was around US$9 per month. That suggests lower-priced plans are part of how consumers manage costs, but whether one saves a household money depends on its current subscriptions, the plan’s price, and whether the advertising trade-off is acceptable. Bundles and aggregation

Kantar describes bundling and aggregation as industry responses to the expense and effort of juggling separate subscriptions. Its report discusses examples from the 2024 landscape, including a Disney, Hulu, and Max bundle and a Comcast package including Apple TV+, Netflix, and Peacock. These are dated examples in the report, not confirmation that those offers remain available or have the same terms today. Kantar Media, 2025

How to decide which services to keep

A practical review starts with what your household watches, not the number of subscriptions in isolation. Compare each service against the same criteria:

  • Monthly cost: Check the current price of each plan and your total household spending across services.
  • Recent use: Note whether anyone watched the service recently and how often. An active subscription that went unused for months is a clear candidate for review.
  • Content timing: Consider whether a show, season, sport, or event you care about is available now or at another time.
  • Value and alternatives: Ask whether the content you actually watch justifies the fee and whether another service or current bundle offers it.
  • Plan trade-offs: Compare the combined price of ad-supported and ad-free options, along with the advertising experience and the content included.
  • Cancellation and return: Check the service’s current cancellation and resubscription terms before deciding to rotate. Terms differ by provider.

Bundling may reduce the friction of managing separate services, but a bundle is useful only if its total cost and included content fit your household. Count any subscriptions it would replace rather than treating the bundle as savings by default.

What the 2025 figures do—and do not—show

The available findings describe different populations, time periods, and questions: completed cancellations, plans to cancel, reasons given by cancelers, and cancellations followed by a return. Most figures cited here concern U.S. consumers; Kantar’s U.K. comparison is a separate measure. They support a picture of cost pressure, value judgments, and subscription cycling, not a claim that every service is losing subscribers or that cancellations are rising by every definition.

For documentary viewers, the practical point is that streaming access is increasingly treated as something to manage around viewing habits. A canceled subscription may mean the household is spending more deliberately—or simply waiting for the next program it wants to watch.
