After the September 10, 2024, presidential debate, Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz on Instagram. She said that false AI-generated images suggesting she supported Donald Trump had heightened her fears about AI and misinformation, and prompted her to be transparent about her own voting plans.
What did Taylor Swift say about AI?
Swift said she had learned that AI images falsely depicting her as endorsing Donald Trump had been posted to his site. In her Instagram statement, she wrote: “It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation.”

She said the episode led her to be clear about her actual plans as a voter: “It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter.” She also wrote, “The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.” TechCrunch reproduced the passage from Swift’s statement in its September 11, 2024, report.
What were the false images of Taylor Swift?
Contemporary reporting described images of Swift dressed as Uncle Sam and imagery promoting “Swifties for Trump.” They falsely implied that Swift and her fans backed Trump’s campaign. Swift referred to AI images of herself; descriptions of the specific imagery come from contemporaneous reports, rather than an independent forensic assessment here. The Guardian covered the images and Swift’s response in its September 11, 2024, report.

Why did Taylor Swift endorse Kamala Harris?
Swift gave a political reason for her choice as well as explaining why she wanted to make it public. She wrote: “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election.” She said she supported Harris because she believed Harris fought for causes and rights that Swift wanted championed, describing her as a “steady-handed, gifted leader.”
Swift praised Walz’s record on LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and abortion rights, as she characterized it. She also urged readers to consider the candidates for themselves: “your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.” Her statement therefore connected the false images to her decision to clarify her vote, but did not say they were the sole reason for her endorsement. The Washington Post’s September 10, 2024, report covered the endorsement wording and the reported August imagery.

How does the endorsement fit Swift’s political history?
The 2024 endorsement was not Swift’s first public political intervention. She endorsed candidates in Tennessee in 2018 and supported Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020. TIME’s September 11, 2024, political timeline places the endorsement in that longer history. The Guardian reported that Swift signed her 2024 post “Childless cat lady,” a reference to a remark JD Vance had made about Democrats.

TIME reported on September 11, 2024, that Swift’s endorsement post had received 8 million likes. That is a historical engagement snapshot, not a current count and not evidence that the post persuaded voters or changed election outcomes. The Guardian described the audience Swift addressed at the time as 283 million followers; that, too, is a contemporaneous figure rather than a current follower count.

There is a separate measure of earlier voter engagement: TIME reported that a 2023 National Voter Registration Day post was followed by more than 35,000 eligible voters registering, according to Vote.org. That figure concerns the earlier post; it does not establish that the 2024 endorsement produced registrations or changed votes. TIME’s September 11, 2024, report covered the endorsement’s reported likes and wider discussion.
