Midnights is Taylor Swift’s tenth studio album: a hushed, synth-led pop record built around the thoughts that surface after dark. Its strongest songs turn self-scrutiny and intimacy into vivid melodies; its restrained production can also make some tracks feel less distinct than their writing. This review covers the standard 13-track album, released October 21, 2022.
What kind of album is Midnights?
Swift framed Midnights as “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life.” The phrase gives the record a unifying premise, not a claim that every song is a literal diary entry. After the folk-leaning folklore and evermore, the writing returns toward a more diaristic point of view, with songs moving among self-consciousness, desire, regret, memory and relationship intimacy. Official Charts covers the album’s release framing; the Associated Press reproduces Swift’s announcement.
How does the production shape the mood?
The record favors synthesizers, slower tempos, soft-edged textures and room between sounds over a full-throttle pop assault. Apple Music describes the result as hushed and inward-looking, with longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff central to the sound. That negative space suits the late-night concept: the arrangements make room for small changes in mood and the voice of the narrator.
Restraint is also the album’s main risk. Pitchfork hears moments of crystalline production and atmosphere, including “Midnight Rain” and “Snow on the Beach,” but argues that the sustained austerity can leave some passages feeling numb, uneven or impersonal. This is a critical judgment, not a measurable flaw: listeners who value a consistent, soft-focus atmosphere may find the cohesion satisfying, while those looking for sharp contrasts between tracks may find it muted.

Which songs show the album’s range?
- “Anti-Hero” turns self-critique into an immediately memorable pop hook, giving the album’s inward gaze a candid, uneasy center.
- “Sweet Nothing” offers a quieter kind of intimacy, its stillness counterbalancing the record’s anxiety and self-questioning.
- “Snow on the Beach” leans into dreamy atmosphere; Pitchfork singles out its sound as one of the album’s successes.
- “Bejeweled” is brighter and more extroverted, a welcome burst of pop confidence against the more subdued material.
- “Midnight Rain” uses crystalline production to give its reflection on change a distinct sonic shape, another moment Pitchfork praises.
These songs make the album’s contrasts clearest: self-doubt against ease, dreaminess against sparkle. Still, much of the record stays within a narrow production palette, so its most revealing differences often come from point of view and melody rather than dramatic changes in sound. Apple Music’s editorial account emphasizes the wordplay and melodic appeal; Pitchfork is more ambivalent about how consistently those qualities emerge.
Is the 3am Edition part of this review?
No. The review above concerns the standard 13-track album. The 3am Edition adds seven songs and is a separate expanded edition, not part of that original track count. Pitchfork treats the additions as supplemental and uneven, so they should not be used to describe the standard album’s sequencing or length.
