These are Rotten Tomatoes’ review and user-rating indicators, not measures of how many people watched the show. The figures are a dated snapshot: an earlier launch-day report gave critics’ score as 43%, so scores should not be treated as fixed.
What is the “unwanted record”?
An October 3, 2026 report characterized both scores as franchise lows among Yellowstone entries. That is a reported comparison, not a record designation issued by Rotten Tomatoes. The current Rotten Tomatoes page confirms Marshals’ scores, but does not itself rank every series or season in the franchise. The available evidence therefore supports attributing the franchise-low description to that report, rather than claiming a verified lowest score across every Taylor Sheridan production.

What is Marshals about?
The CBS drama follows Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, as he joins an elite U.S. Marshals unit in Montana. The series expands the Yellowstone universe, with Kayce bringing his cowboy and Navy SEAL experience to the work. It premiered on March 1, 2026.
How did the premiere’s audience compare with its Rotten Tomatoes reception?
CBS and Paramount reported that the March 1 premiere drew 9.52 million viewers, citing Nielsen Live+SD Panel + Big Data. The network called it the most-watched new scripted-series premiere without a football lead-in since 2018. That is a separate audience-reach metric: it does not change or contradict the critics’ and users’ Rotten Tomatoes scores, which reflect reviews and ratings rather than viewing totals.

Why did the showrunner say it was different from Yellowstone?
In an October 3, 2026 interview, showrunner Spencer Hudnut said the CBS series was built around a procedural format rather than as another season of Yellowstone: “That this show was going to be for CBS, that it was going to have a procedural engine, and if they were expecting the next season of Yellowstone, that’s not what they were going to get, and I couldn’t do anything about that.” The distinction helps explain the expectations around the series, but does not establish why individual critics or viewers rated it as they did.
