In a May 2018 interview with Scroll, Tanuja said she chooses films for their story and for a director’s ability to tell it well. While in Kolkata promoting Sonar Pahar, she also spoke about personal choice, self-motivation, and why children should be encouraged to think independently.
What did Tanuja say about Sonar Pahar?
The Bengali film brought Tanuja back to Bengali cinema after a long gap. Scroll described it as her second release in recent years after A Death in the Gunj (2016), and noted that she shared screen time with her former co-star Soumitra Chatterjee. Parambrata Chatterjee directed the film.

In the story, Tanuja plays a mother whose relationship with her son has deteriorated. A friendship with a seven-year-old boy, played by Srijato Bandopadhyay, changes that relationship. The interview was published on May 21, 2018, while Tanuja was in Kolkata promoting the film; its release was then scheduled for June 2018.
How does Tanuja choose her film roles?
For Tanuja, the story comes first, along with the director’s ability to bring it to the screen. She explained her approach to Scroll: “The story. That is what is important, and the director who is able to tell that story properly. He reads the subject to me. If I can see the film, then I will do it.”
Her answer describes a personal way of deciding whether to take a role: she wants to be able to imagine the film from the story as the director presents it. It is a comment about her own choices, not a general formula for actors.
What did she say about children and independent thinking?
Tanuja recalled that the young actor playing the boy talked a lot and asked questions. She said she valued that kind of curiosity: “I think it’s very important for children to be curious.”
She also argued that children should be able to think for themselves, and criticized rote learning for limiting imagination. Those were her views in the 2018 interview, prompted in part by working with a questioning child actor.
What was Tanuja’s attitude to happiness and advice?
Tanuja described happiness as something she chose for herself. “I will be happy doing whatever I am doing. That is the choice I will make,” she said. She also put the idea in more personal terms: “I am happy because I want to be. And I will be. Nobody else can make me happy.”

Asked about motivation, she said: “I inspire myself. You have to inspire yourself. Nobody else can do it for you.” That outlook was paired with a reluctance to direct other people’s decisions: “I don’t advise anybody. Think for yourself. Nobody can tell you what to do.”
What did she say about social media?
Asked about social media, Tanuja offered a brief, pragmatic assessment: “I don’t know if it is evil or not, but it is a necessity.” The remark appeared in the same 2018 interview and should be read in that context, rather than as a statement of her present-day views.
