Sabrina Carpenter’s “Taste” video is a dark comedy about a rivalry that turns into an alliance. Jenna Ortega plays the ex-partner of the boyfriend linked to Carpenter’s character; after a series of stylized, violent confrontations, the women leave his funeral together. Directed by Dave Meyers, the video premiered on August 23, 2024, alongside Carpenter’s album Short n’ Sweet. ABC News/Good Morning America and iHeart reported on the release and its plot.
What is the “Taste” music video about?
The video frames Carpenter and Ortega as rivals caught in a love triangle with a man played by Rohan Campbell. Their conflict escalates into repeated attacks and deaths, staged with an exaggerated, darkly comic tone rather than as realistic drama. The story ultimately turns the rivalry on its head: the boyfriend dies, and the two women leave his funeral together.
At the funeral, Carpenter’s character describes him as “Clingy, lots of trauma,” and Ortega’s character adds, “Very insecure,” according to ABC News/Good Morning America. The lines belong to the fictional characters in the video; they are not statements by the performers about real people.
Why is Jenna Ortega in the video?
Ortega plays the boyfriend’s ex-partner and Carpenter’s character’s rival. The casting puts two performers in a fictional showdown that drives the video’s horror-comedy plot. It does not establish a real-life feud or relationship between Ortega and Carpenter.
