Actor Vijay announced the formation of Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) on 2 February 2024, saying it would aim to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. TVK later won 108 of the Assembly’s 234 seats, according to the Election Commission of India’s results page.
What Vijay announced in February 2024
Vijay announced the formation of Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam on 2 February 2024. Contemporary coverage reported that he intended the new party to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. “Thalapathy” is a popular epithet for Vijay, not a separate political office.
In a statement reproduced by India Today, Vijay said: “Our goal is to contest and win the upcoming 2026 assembly elections and bring about the fundamental political change that people want.” India Today’s report of the launch statement attributes the words to Vijay; the quote is reproduced in news coverage.
What TVK said about the 2024 general election
At launch, Vijay said TVK would not contest the 2024 general election and would not support another party in that election. This was the party’s stated plan at the time; it is distinct from the later Assembly result.

How the party name is spelled
Contemporaneous reports used the transliteration “Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam.” TVK’s current website spells the name “Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam” and describes it as a people-centric political movement for Tamil Nadu. The spelling difference reflects transliteration; both refer to TVK.
What happened in the 2026 Assembly election
The Election Commission of India’s party-wise results page records TVK winning 108 of 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election. The Commission identifies the contest as the General Election to Assembly Constituencies, Tamil Nadu.
