Malaysian police later reclassified the case as murder, but that classification is not a finding of guilt, and the cited reports do not establish an official cause of death. Hsieh was linked to Malaysian rapper Namewee through reported video work; the Attorney-General was reported saying there was no evidence showing Namewee caused her death.
What happened to Iris Hsieh Yu-hsin?
Hsieh was found dead in a Kuala Lumpur hotel bathtub on Oct. 22, 2025. Police reportedly said she had arrived in Malaysia on Oct. 20 and expected to stay until Oct. 24. CNA reported that police reclassified the case from sudden death to murder under Section 302 of Malaysia’s Penal Code on Nov. 4, after further investigation. The police classification describes the investigation; it does not establish that any particular person committed a crime. CNA’s report on the reclassification said postmortem and toxicology results were still pending at that time.
What was the cause of death?
The reports cited here do not establish an official cause of death. On Nov. 4, police said postmortem and toxicology reports were pending, and the Nov. 12 account of the investigation’s referral to prosecutors did not provide a final cause. Claims that she died of a heart attack should not be treated as confirmed on the basis of these reports.
What was Hsieh’s connection to Namewee?
CNA reported that Hsieh was reportedly working on a video project with Namewee, whose name is also reported as Wee Meng Chee, and that she had appeared in one of his music videos in 2020. A later CNA report attributed to Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus the description of a “special relationship” between them. The report did not establish details of that relationship. CNA’s account of the reported connection presents it as reporting and an attributed police characterization, not proof of responsibility.

What did authorities say about Namewee?
In November 2025, reports said Namewee was detained to assist the murder investigation and later released on police bail. CNA reported that Attorney-General Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said there was no evidence showing Namewee caused Hsieh’s death. Bail and investigative involvement are procedural developments, not a determination of guilt; the reports do not say he was convicted of or found guilty of her murder. CNA’s Nov. 13 report covered the bail release and the Attorney-General’s statement.
What was the latest reported case status?
Bernama reported on Nov. 12, 2025, that police had completed their investigation and sent the investigation papers to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further instructions. That report said Namewee remained in remand at the time; later coverage reported his release on bail. The cited material does not establish a later final prosecutorial decision or court outcome, so this dated procedural update should not be read as the case’s verified current disposition. Bernama’s Nov. 12 report describes the referral.

Why do reports give different ages?
CNA reported Hsieh as 31, while Bernama’s Nov. 12, 2025 report gave her age as 33. The cited reports do not resolve the discrepancy, so “31” should be attributed to CNA rather than presented as an uncontested age.
