There is no single, evidence-backed canon of the 25 greatest telenovela villains, so this is a curated shortlist rather than a definitive ranking. It prioritizes cultural recognition, influence on the story, memorable characterization, and range across countries and eras. “Villain” is used broadly: the list includes central antagonists, a comic antagonist, and a boundary case who is often better described as an antihero. The available sources support the entries below, but not 25 equally verified choices, so the list stops short of padding the count.
Iconic antagonists who drive the story
Catalina Creel — Cuna de lobos (1986, Mexico)
Portrayed by María Rubio, Catalina is the scheming center of the Larios family conflict, not merely an obstacle to the heroes. Her ambition and crimes make her a force that shapes the plot, while her eye patch gives the character an instantly recognizable visual signature. Televisa’s retrospective describes her as the engine of the story, and the character remains a defining figure in discussions of Mexican telenovela villains. Televisa’s retrospective on Catalina Creel.
Soraya Montenegro — María la del barrio (1995, Mexico)
Itatí Cantoral’s Soraya is remembered for her confrontations, memorable lines, and striking look. Cantoral recalled that changing her hair for the role became a turning point in her career. Soraya’s appeal as a villain rests as much on the force of the performance and the character’s theatrical presence as on the trouble she creates. Univision’s feature on Cantoral and Soraya.
Paola Bracho — La usurpadora (1998, Mexico)
Gabriela Spanic plays Paola, a wealthy socialite who encounters her identical twin, Paulina, and pressures her to take Paola’s place. That identity swap sets the deception at the heart of the series in motion. Paola’s defining villainy is not just personal malice; it is the audacious scheme that makes the plot possible. Angélica Narváez — Marimar (Mexico)

The humiliation is central to why Angélica stands out: her cruelty creates a vivid personal grievance rather than an abstract obstacle. Univision’s roundup of memorable telenovela villains.
Odete Roitman — Vale Tudo (Brazil)
Globo identifies Odete as a famous antagonist and a powerful businesswoman whose actions create conflict with her daughter. Her inclusion makes clear that telenovela villainy is not confined to Mexican productions: Brazilian dramas have their own widely recognized antagonists and traditions. His role broadens the list beyond social schemers and family rivals to include a villain whose conduct is rooted in coercion and abuse. Globo’s retrospective on unforgettable television villains.

Univision’s feature on telenovela villains and actresses who shaved their heads.
Patricia Hernández, “la peliteñida” — Yo soy Betty, la fea (Colombia)
Patricia is remembered for her catchphrases and comic presence, but she is not a conventional violent or murderous villain. Teresa — Teresa (Mexico; adaptation-dependent)
Teresa is a borderline choice because her ambition and morally harmful decisions coexist with a more sympathetic dimension. Univision explicitly raises the possibility that she is an antihero rather than a straightforward villain. The title has multiple adaptations, so a specific actor or version should not be assumed without identifying it. Univision’s discussion of whether Teresa is a villain or antiheroine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is a shortlist, not a definitive top 25
Entertainment roundups can show which characters outlets consider memorable, and broadcaster retrospectives can establish important show and character context. Neither kind of source, on its own, proves a universal popularity order. The available coverage also does not verify 25 characters to the same standard across role, series, country, and portrayal. Rather than manufacture a numbered ranking or add unsupported names, this list identifies entries with specific source-backed context and marks the cases that fall outside a strict definition of villain.
