T-Mobile’s 2026 Big Game commercial uses a reimagined Backstreet Boys performance of “I Want It That Way” to sell a straightforward message: “Why is it better over here?” The ad turns nostalgia into a pitch for the company’s network, value and customer benefits. It makes that case; it does not prove that consumers generally prefer T-Mobile or that the campaign was effective.
What happens in the commercial?
T-Mobile announced the 60-second spot on February 6, 2026, ahead of its scheduled airing in the second quarter of the Big Game on Sunday, February 8. The company said it was returning to the broadcast for the 13th consecutive year.

Set inside T-Mobile’s Times Square Signature Store and filmed with real customers, the ad begins with the question “Why is it better over here?” A button press sets off a reimagined performance of the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way.” Druski, mgk and Pierson Fodé appear alongside the group, according to T-Mobile’s announcement. The independent iSpot.tv listing also describes the Times Square reveal and performance.
What is T-Mobile trying to sell?
The song and celebrity appearances provide the hook; the underlying pitch is that a wireless provider should offer more than a connection. In its announcement, T-Mobile presented its offer through a mix of network and value claims, plus examples of customer benefits: entertainment offers, DashPass, T-Satellite, travel benefits, concert access and weekly surprises.
#1 Best Overall
Those are benefits the company promoted in February 2026, not independent confirmation that its service is better than competitors’ or that every offer remains available on the same terms. Eligibility and benefit terms can change. T-Mobile also called its network “America’s Best Network”; that is the advertiser’s claim, not a comparative performance finding established by the campaign details.
Why use “I Want It That Way”?
The familiar song makes the service pitch instantly recognizable and gives the ad a performance-led reveal. T-Mobile framed the spot as a way to prompt viewers to consider what their wireless provider does for them, then linked that question to the company’s promise of more benefits, transparency and a better overall experience.

Campaign participants also described the idea in terms of connection and shared experience. T-Mobile Chief Brand and Communications Officer Lucy McLellan said the Backstreet Boys’ return put a fresh twist on an iconic song and brought the “it’s better over here” message to life. Panay Films founder and CEO Andrew Panay said nostalgia and live experiences speak to people across generations. These are the participants’ explanations of the creative, not independent findings about what viewers felt.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the ad prove people want it that way?
No—not in the evidentiary sense. The campaign shows how T-Mobile wants to answer its own question: with a recognizable song, a high-profile cast and a list of service and membership benefits. The available campaign descriptions do not establish a general consumer preference for T-Mobile, audience response, advertising effectiveness or a sales impact. The announced 60-second runtime and the company’s stated 13-year Big Game streak describe the spot and the advertiser’s history; neither demonstrates that this ad persuaded viewers.

- 30 years in the making, the Backstreet Boys released their first-ever holiday album, A Very Backstreet Christmas, in 2022
So “proves that you want it that way” works as a playful interpretation of the song and the ad’s confident sales message, not as a conclusion supported by measured consumer evidence. Anyone weighing the advertised benefits against another carrier would need current plan terms and independent evidence for network comparisons.
