But the often-repeated calculation of $19.95 multiplied by 10 million does not establish that Somers personally made $199.5 million—or any other specific amount. The available reporting does not document her royalty share, costs, or net earnings, and the ThighMaster was part of a much wider product business, not simply one endorsement.
What is established about Somers and the ThighMaster?
Somers became the product’s best-known television spokesperson. ABC News reported that inventor Josh Reynolds asked her to represent the ThighMaster on television. Somers later summed up its personal impact by saying, “This changed my life. This changed my fortune.” That is her description of what the product meant to her, not a disclosed earnings statement. In a 2006 Inc. interview, Somers and Hamel said they had sold more than 10 million ThighMasters. Somers repeated a similar figure in a 2020 interview with Entrepreneur: “We sold 10 million ThighMasters right out of the gate.” These are reported sales claims from interviews; the articles do not provide audited unit-sales records or financial accounts.
Does “$19.95 times 10 million” mean Somers made $199.5 million?
No. In 2022, Inside Edition quoted Somers saying, “I grew up poor. And I live a good life, $19.95 times 10 million, so kind of do the math.” The story’s co-host supplied a different result, $299,250,000. Neither figure is a verified measure of Somers’s income. The $19.95-times-10-million calculation is gross-price arithmetic, not an accounting of sales revenue, royalties, or personal wealth.

The calculation assumes a uniform price and says nothing about how money was divided or spent. It does not establish the price paid for every unit, retailer and distributor margins, manufacturing or advertising costs, licensing terms, ownership shares, taxes, or other expenses. The available reporting does not disclose Somers’s royalty rate, personal share, or net proceeds from ThighMaster sales. A precise personal earnings total therefore cannot be supported by these figures.
Was the ThighMaster her only product-related business?
No. The 2006 Inc. interview describes a broader licensing and sales operation that included more than 500 Suzanne Somers products. Its examples include jewelry, cosmetics, prepared foods, cruises, and books, as well as the ThighMaster. Hamel described marketing the device through infomercials; he also recounted suggesting that Somers take her jewelry line to the Home Shopping Network.

The ThighMaster was a signature success within that larger commercial activity. Calling it “one product endorsement” can blur important distinctions: being a television spokesperson, participating in a licensing business, and earning money from product sales are not interchangeable descriptions of a person’s compensation.

A Federal Trade Commission complaint concerns a different product and does not establish anything about ThighMaster compensation. It says Somers received $89,900 plus in-kind TA-65MD product for a 2012 segment on her show, and that viewers were not told the segment was paid advertising. What can readers reasonably conclude?
- Somers was closely associated with the ThighMaster through television marketing, and she said it changed her fortune.
